Sharp looking nickel with interesting tone. I kinda like it, and I cannot be alone, so it is probably market acceptable toning.

I agree, jabuck, the toning really caught my eye and even if it is artificial, it is still appealing to me!

Fun project, keep us updated with complete pictures of the 1928 uncirculated set!

Maybe one day the coins will all be uncirculated, but for now I am just putting mint sets together from meaningful years for me. Currently my grandparents birth years (1923, 1927, and 1928).

Your 1928 has mismatched die states, which is common in the Buffalo series, a late die state obverse and a middle die state reverse...

Fortcollins: I really appreciate your in depth analysis! You certainly have a wealth of knowledge on the Buffalo series. Thank you for taking the time to write out such a detailed response. I've learned a lot from your initial response and follow up! Thank you, panzaldi, for initiating that

Just picked up this 1928 Buffalo Nickel to replace a lower grade one in a 1928 mint set I'm putting together. There is some what I would assume is verdigris on the obverse feathers and reverse in a couple small places, so it would get environmental damage. I'm at AU on grade, but don't have experience with Buffalo Nickels. What does everyone think? Also, does the toning on the obverse appear natural or artificial?

Thanks!

Thank you, DOCC! Here are some closer pictures of the black spots, though I'm not sure how much they will help.

The pinkish "tone" almost appears like a "haze," which is why I wondered if it is something on the coin.

I got some great feedback on my previous post of the 1927 P Peace Dollar about it being cleaned that has been helpful for me in learning more about cleaning and what to look for.

What are your thoughts on the grade for this 1923 P Mercury Dime?

Some additional things I'm wondering:

What might the pinkish film on the coin be? The black spots? Are these things that could be helped by an acetone bath?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the video, BH1964! That was very helpful! I certainly have more to learn about how to spot cleaning. I usually just look for fine parallel lines indicating brush strokes, but you wouldn't see those if someone buffed it!

Thanks everyone your insight on the coin. I can certainly understand the opinions based on the photos. I'm having a tough time with this one because I haven't been able to take any photos that truly capture what the coin looks like in person. I have uncirculated coin sets that look virtually identical and also don't show show well when I try taking photos.

I'll probably take to my LCS to see what they say when they can see it in person. Mainly because I'm just interested.

I'm uploading a few more photos taken with my camera to (hopefully) show the natural luster of the coin.

What you want to see is a cartwheel effect

Greasy Fingers, it does cartwheel nicely but I'm unable to show it in the photos with my phone. I might try taking more photos with my camera to see if those help. I'll probably take it into my LCS to see what they think of the coin in person.

jacrispies, it has a lot of luster but it doesn't show well in my pictures. The actual coin is visually very appealing and cartwheels nicely. If you have any recommendations on how to take photos to show the natural luster I'm all ears!

Can you let me know what you are seeing that makes you think it has been cleaned? Trying to get better at identifying evidence of cleaning. There are some scratches but they seem more like scratches from being in a sleeve rather than brushing. Thanks!

Hi! Can I get opinions on grade for this 1927 Peace Dollar? Also, are there signs it has been cleaned? There are some surface scratches but nothing that says to me it has been cleaned. Would be happy to hear what other people think and what they are looking at if cleaned. I tried to get photos from different angles for lighting. Photos don't do a good job of showing the great luster. Edit: added 2 additional images to hopefully show luster better.

IndianGoldEagle what are you looking at to suggest it spent some time in the ground and has been cleaned?

Got it from my LCS. Part of a book collection the store got. I'm confident it is legitimate. I'm a little worried about the environmental damage but want to know what people think it would grade. I'm between G/VG, but lean VG.

Thank you for the opinions!

I am interested if there are any recommendations for conservation or if that is recommended?

Going through some of my dad's quarters and found this 1964-D Washington quarter that appears to be missing the "N" and "T" in "IN GOD WE TRUST." The "G" and "R" are also partially obscured. Is this a known error or an error at all? It doesn't appear like they have been ground down as the "I" is still full relief and the coin is in generally good shape. Thank you for any insight.
