Some interesting examples of coinage and currency from the pre-WW2 and WW2 era I recently ordered. An interest in History is what brought me to coins and the 1933 to 1939 era in Germany has a particular interest to me as the Nazi's transformed their economy with coinage and currency. I plan to document this era extensively.
Prior to 1 Sep 1939 they used nickle and silver a lot for their coinage and monetary economy but these became critical metals for their war effort. Its those years when they built up their war machine that interest me the most.
All three Axis powers actually. I hope to have a good representation of these heinous tyranny's in the form of their money. The Soviets I'll also add to the list.

Quote: I found out that "random" meant 1908 No Motto, the commonest of the common. The 1927 and 1928 are common priced but better struck.
Most likely '27 S, '28 and '29 P's, '26 S. The only high mintage for the first three years were the '09 S's at 2,774,925 and the '08 P's at 4,271,551.
Whew! These graded collectables of fairly low mintage's are going for a ton. I might have to settle for a higher mintage/Lesser value year and mint. Like this one. This is a nice coin. https://www.jmbullion.com/1928-20-s...n-pcgs-ms64/ |

Well I found the one I want. Its a 1908 MS65, but oh I see it has no motto. Heres another one but its a 1924 MS65, which is a bit late. I'd love a 1st year graded but you can't even find a 1907. The prices will make your eyes bleed in the $3,700 range for MS65. I dont have the cash in my account yet so I'm just looking.
Heres the thing. I know there was an original issue with the coin at its inception. Teddy Roosevelt didn't like the original high relief coins with no motto released in 1907 and the design was changed. I'm assuming ANY MS state 1907 will be out of my reach but did this no motto design extend into 1908 as well ?
So I guess I'm looking for a '08 or '09 MS64 or better coin. For the right coin I'll use the CC card and pay the extra. |

What Is Your Preferred Way To Stack Gold?

I'm in the market now. Boy if guys thought gold was expensive at $2534 what must they be thinking now?
The way I figure I have 3 ways to go.
#1, is the route of the pure stack and for this 1 oz bars are hard to beat. I only have the cash for a few so I'm no JP Morgan. I just want to diversify and its my belief gold is never going back down.
#2, is the Numismatic route. I could buy a gold coin with some collectors interest as well as some bullion worth. For this I'm thinking a highly graded ST. Gaudens from an interesting year with full motto.
#3, Is the bullion coin route that is more bullion then collectable like an Eagle, 1 oz, or a Maple, of a Britannia, or go hog wild and get a gold 1oz Libertad.
This will likely be my last gold purchase for a good long while, maybe forever, and anyway I want to get back to stacking silver and collecting. Collecting is actually my passion even tho I know dang little about it. I just spent $500 on coinage and currency of Germany and the Third Reich circa 1918 thru 1939. I only stack metal to diversify, and in any event, I think paper currency is going to hell in a handbasket. |

Quote: Based on this sentiment, it seems like you should buy the best-stuck, best-preserved, slabbed one that you can find. Don't worry about spending a little extra money on a better coin.
If you were just in it for the bullion value, then I think you would want to go down a different pathway.
Wisely said. My gut tells me they aint gonna get any cheaper and who wants a common coin ? If its just bullion I'd want then I'd go a different route.
The graded 1800'somethings are hard to find. |

Quote: gold is doing exactly what it is supposed to be doing: holding it's value. nothing has changed for gold. it is the dollar and/or the economy that's nosediving, not gold. thank a banker.
gold has intrinsic value. dollars do not. all fiat currencies fail eventually. the dollar is no different. you are watching the dollar tank in real-time, but you have to look past the various distractions to see it.
when you buy gold, you are exchanging your failing dollars for sound money. to me it's a wise move, swapping out debt for sound money.
i'd love to address many of the comments in this thread, but I don't have time at the moment. maybe later.
don't sweat those goofy sideways shuffles or small drops in the gold price. gold is doing what it's supposed to be doing. i'd be more mindful of what the dollars in my pocket are doing. (hint: they're losing value)
"Sigh" I'm afraid your right. So I can forgetabout gold ever being even $3,000 again "right now its back up to $3,308" and I guess theres little point in not buying. And I could buy but I'd have to pay tax pulling the money out because if you dont have spare cash on hand you have to go into various savings engines like 401's, deferred's, ....ect. But in two years gold has darn near doubled so where will it end ?
I almost launched yesterday for 2 or 3 coins but just couldn't quite do it. The thought of gold taking a crap just prevented me. Any advice anyone ? |

Quote: Would you elaborate on this statement, please?
Well in 1883 who cared if a Morgan dollar was minted in 'frisco and look at it now ? Of the 100,000 minted they still only meant a buck in 1883. Just like a dollar bill, and now you have to bleed for one.
Maybe this Liberty will be the same. Who knows ? But one thing is for sure it will take a lot of years. This coin is priced for collectors, not silver stackers. |

LOL My best friend called me the other day and said he was at a coin dealer and the guy offered $3,000 for the 1889-S gold Liberty that has been passed down thru his family for generations. Ive seen the coin and think its worth the cost to be graded. If not, and probably not due to the year and mint, its sure as hell to nice a coin to sell to some coin grifter for $200 under melt.
I told him to run dont walk. I also told him not to sell the coin since he doesn't need the money. Needing the money is one thing but in my mind keeping a coin in the family is important if you dont have an absolute need for the cash.
Luckily my kid has an interest in coins and he hopefully wont do anything stupid with them after I croak. |

Quote: A lot of effort has been spent making USD the world reserve currency. It will never fail because no currency can takes it's place. It is laughable to think that world commerce could revolve around the ruble or yuan or euro. If USD fails then everybody fails. When it is so much simpler to keep kicking the can down the road, why descend into Bartertown?
Yes, USD continues to be eaten away by inflation. We've known this since we were all born and it will continue.
Well in our lifetimes certainly. 88% of the worlds commerce is done using the dollar "next highest is Euro 6%". 60% of all global reserves are held in USD. The Chinese Renminbi barely even makes the ticker at 2% which means even the Chinese dont like using it. Or at least saving it. The biggest reason being China's protectionist economy and their theft of Intellectual property rights.
They keep their currency low by policy because this makes their products much more competitive on the INTL market and has caused huge trade surpluses with other nations. Most of all America.
The dollars weakness is the reason I'm a stacker "tho just a small one". Lately Ive been thinking of getting away from collecting and going back to just stacking PM's, tho it will mostly be silver. Were I rich I'd be a dedicated collector because I have a passion for it but I'm not rich and my main reason for being here was asset protection.
Dont get me wrong. I'd love to hunt down a splendid example of every Morgan year/Vam ever struck but I'm not oil Sheik rich and I have to be practical. I had thought to collect every Libertad year and while that was within reach theres a few years that would really bleed me.
And if you can't collect every year then whats the point ? I'd love a Barber collection too but I just got into this to late in life so I might just spend the summer stacking metal. At least until I saw my next interesting Morgan. |
