Posting a new variety of falus from Mahmud shah I.

AE-9.18gms; Dia-17.8mm. By weight, this is a falus of 80 rati standard. Obv - 'al sultan al azam abu al fath nasir al dunya wa aldin' ("al fath" cuts across the middle of the coin), date 911 between al fath and nasir) Rev - mahmud shah al sultan within square (shah not intercepting sultan) Ref: Obv legend as on G168 (1½ falus) and G 188(falus) (Goron & Goenka). Reverse legend as on G 168, but varies from G 188 in two aspects, 'sha' does not cut 'sultan' and the legend is within square instead of peaked square seen in G 188. So this falus belongs to variety G 168 (1½ falus) and is an unlisted variety of G 188 Falus.

@Pertinax: In those days, 28 chukrams made a rupee of local sircar. British rupee bore a premium of half a chukram or 8 cash. This count rather than weight of coin was used in transactions. The equation is 4 chukrams=1 panam.7 panams went into one rupee. That always made it 7x4=28 chukrams to a rupee. |
