Anyone who has participated in the Proof 3CN market knows that their prices are bottoming out. I haven't seen them this bad in over 20 years of collecting them. Wholesale pricing for pre-1877 PF64 coins is under $300. It's insane.
If you ever wanted to collect them. I can't imagine a better time. They're dirt cheap. The whole darn series.
[I'm not thrilled with the overall color of what's shown here. I played around with this in Lightroom a lot and will leave it here for now.]

I really appreciate the responses thus far.
So far from what I'm seeing, a low bar expectation might be $200. The dealer carries some risk in trying to move the coin as-is without trying to dip it and seeing if it can be raised to maybe an MS63 but then as a raw coin without the GSA provenance. There are a lot of GSA coins available and not normally with this type of situation (i.e. in just a "Silver Dollar" holder with the toning going on here). |

Quote: I think $300 minimum. Maybe $350. I appreciate the response, but those values look like strong retail, not what a dealer might pay. The one eBay sale I saw on a similar coin was $200 and that is essentially full retail. Perhaps it was a flook and way too low. This would be a lot easier to value if it was in the standard "Uncirculated" GSA holder. |

I'm helping a friend of a friend out in valuing a collection she recently acquired. She wants a realistic value when she goes to sell the items to a dealer, not retail. For the most part, I'm fairly confident on valuing the vast majority of the collection. However, the GSA morgan has me scratching my head. I haven't seen the coin in person but will soon and I'd like a pretty good idea of the likely valuation range ahead of time.
I've attached the photos she gave me. They're not that great but good enough for a rough go at a valuation. You can tell this is simply labeled as "Silver Dollar" (not Uncirculated) by the GSA and they noted that it's a "cull". I think the obverse is a little fugly. I'm not sure what's going on with that spotting (any ideas?).
I did try looking through recent eBay sales, but only found one possible example while all others were for the better GSA holders.
What would be a reasonable wholesale value on this (let's assume the sight-unseen market)?

As a Yank, please tell me why I love Sovereigns so much!
I was very fortunate to get this 1859 Young Head at gold spot. It's a beautiful AU. I know they're probably pretty common, but still my first Shield.
I also got this French 1849-A 20 Franc (I know, not British...but still beautiful). It looks BU.
[A bit blurrier than I'd like to post, but zooming on my iPhone I guess is not the best.]

I had a 2¢ collection over many years and never had a single coin spot like that. That would freak me out, too. I always have dessicant in my storage areas and try to swap out on a somewhat regular basis. The only 2¢ I've owned with a carbon spot is in a.PCGS PF64RB and it's stable. As far as removing, I doubt that's possible short of damaging the coin. What I would do is dump those coins, repurchase, and make sure they're carefully maintained. Really scrutinize any new ones.you buy to make sure there's no.hints of anything like spittle already act on the coin. |
