' ' to the Forum SilverNcoin, regarding Newfoundland coin prices vs Canadian coin prices for the same years, price is not always determined by mintage. It is determined by demand and to some extent by scarcity. The number of collectors of Canadian coins is greater than collectors of Newfoundland coins, creating more demand for Canadian coins. There may have been a smaller mintage of Newfoundland coins vs the Canadian but that does not mean there are less available. In the late 1800's there was a bank failure in Newfoundland, as a result there was a major mistrust of banks and the people hoarded coins rather than depositing in banks. This resulted in an abundance of Newfoundland coins, which gives us the lower price of them today, compared to their Canadian equivalents.

I agree that yours is a VG 10, and pushing 'about' Fine . The coin in the link does not have enough detail above the band in the crown (obverse side) for me to call it a VG-10, in my opinion it is VG-8, but I'm still sharpening my grading skills. |

Welcome to the Forum, nice pictures. I have a couple 52 dbl HPs, none as nice as yours. All mine have different die cracks from the hoof to the 2. I have never seen a 51 dbl HP, except for the picture in the 2014 Charlton. |

Keep it till you get a better Macklin Carney $5, a few months back these were quite scarce, but now , not so much. 4 numbers past a radar, too bad. No premium for the hi digit 6.

A very nice example, beautiful coin. The clashes in the 40s are usually strong, I think what makes your coin so appealing is the high grade shows off the clash very nicely. In some cases, an effort was made to remove some of the clash by reworking the die, but this often left tool marks in its place. In the 50s, the obverse relief was changed, and the clashes were not as noticeable. In some examples of very strong clashes the obverse letters 'GEO' are visible in the date field, I'd be interested to see if this is the case in your 50 cent since it is high grade. Also is there any clashes on the obverse, if yes then pictures would be appreciated. If you're interested you could look at some of my 50 cent clash posts on this site. |
