You don't say if $C or $US. I would take the money regardless. This is a risky auction proposition. Could easily fizzle.

That being said you could consign with a $100k reserve and then sell at $75k if it failed.

You or someone else posted a similar thread here or on another site some years back.

The only way to know what this is really worth is to put it up for sale.

I am going t guess that this was some sort of trial piece that got out in the wild by mistake. I have a cupro nickel 1942 cent that may also be something like this (there is a thread on here about that one).

In a strongly contested auction anything is possible. But I am going to guess the value is somewhere more like the 1999 sale or less. I would look at 1969 large date 10 cents, 1966 small beads dollar and some of the 2000P 10 cents as comparables. It should be higher than those, but I would guess maybe $25k to $50k.

Nice coin.

Looks double clipped to me. Read up here on the Blakesley effect. It creates a depression opposite the clip. So you have one clip with a strong Blakesley effect opposite and a second small clip with only a slight Blakesley effect because the clip itself is very small

I agree at first blush it looks like that.... what I meant by "railroad job" was putting a coin on the tracks in front of a train and causing the coin to be flattened and expanded.

But a press would not cause the striking of reverse elements on the obverse.

Here is a pretty spectacular encased coin error I recently picked up.

First is an example of the coin with no error. It is hard to tell from the photo, but the Canadian cent was probably a little too large for the hole, which was likely sized for a US cent. Or perhaps the Canadian zinc cent was stronger than the US cent. Regardless, it is not set in the encasement very well and it appears to have been under some undue stress. I am wondering if this is a sign of some problems in the minting of this encased coin.

Now we get to the error coin. I am still not 100% sure what happened here, but obviously the press got jammed and the coin was flattened and caused to be significantly enlarged.

At first I was reluctant to buy this becuase I was afraid it might be a "railroad" job or in some other way flattened by a PMD mechanical process.

But I am pretty sure that this is legit. On the obverse side, the lettering that is there. while significantly enlarged, is still crisply struck and convex in three dimensions. Also, the lettering on the obverse side comes from the reverse die. That could only have happened at the time the coin was struck. Since all the legends are convex it does not seem to be some sort of highly complex vise job.

Any opinions on how this coin came to be would be most welcome! While I know how these coins are made, I have still not figured out how this came out this way.

Nice and scarce TT but sadly not on my want list. For me that is a 10 cent TT. But not one you see very often!

Nice! Those brass ones are also very scarce. I had one at one point......I picked it up in a bulk collection buy. I sold maybe 10 to 15 years back it to a noted toonie collector who used to post a lot here. You have any of the unusual 1 cent examples?

The marks made by the "clip" do not seem as worn as the underlying coin, so I would assume they came after minting.

The Hamilton maple leaf coins come with dates between 1900 and 1920. I have only seen brown coins, which is unusual as many encased coins get put away unused. So even early date coins are often found with some decent red on them. The Hamilton coin is an unusual one....it is too large and irregular to be a pocket piece. Some of the coins have pins attached (all the pins look about the same) so some were meant to be (ugly!) jewellery. Most however have no pin attached. Here are three examples....Okie's 1919 coin, another 1919 with the typical pin attached, and a 1917.

I think that is PPM for Penny Press Mint. He is the fellow currently trying to get tool steel.

I think Sean got the Ottawa mint to make them but I am not sure. I think I asked him and I don't think his place is still an option.

Nice irradiated piece. I used to have 2 or three Canadian irradiated coins but I let them go. They are tough to find and typicaly sell for well more than US versions.

Okie, you sold me the Hamilton coin! I will post photos tomorrow of it and a few different Hamilton Maple Leafs

It is nearly impossible to find someone who will do it now. I am in an ongoing discussion with the fellow who was the most recent producer (c 2000 to 2010) who is still trying to get his hands on steel for the dies.

I have found one supplier but they are pretty expensive compared to historical suppliers. Their rings are made of some sort of steel.

I thought I would send out a link to an eBay listing with one of the more special Canadian encased coins out there.... the 1939/40 Carmichael encased dollar. There are a great many Canadian and US General Motors dealers that issued encased coins around 1940. This is the only known example of a Canadian encased silver dollar.

I have spent a certain amount of time restoring old coins.

I am not sure this is cleaned but there is for sure some environmental damage at a minimum. Maybe a form of verdigris from spending some time in a PVC flip.

I would do the WD40 treatment on this one. There are probably references to it here. A quick spray or soak with WD40. A quick brush with a cotton swab....no rubbing! Then wash in Dawn, rinse and pat dry. No rubbing! I think this will come out looking much better.

I think we all know that the PCGS registry system has had some issues. They finally posted the 2024 gold award banners a week or two ago though they still have not posteda summary of the winners. Happy to say I picked up a couple.

I notice today that in the George VI and Elizabeth II Cent categories, the old all time best history appears to have vanished.

So in George VI cents, Stewart Blay has totally disappeared. He had the all time best set for years and would still be #2 all time best I am sure.

Anyone else noticed problems? I know they have a lot of sets to keep track of and maybe they have a manual element to their system. But this is not rocket science.........

The photo is not great, but it looks like it may be an SF cent to me. Looks nice bright red. If so this could be a $500+ coin.

There are sets out there with mixed PL and MS coins. You should post pictures of the cent and 5 cents. The cent could looks like it could be quite nice and if it is an SF it could be worth quite a bit regardless if PL or not.
