This coin has always been one of my favorite commemoratives.

The two soldiers depicted are amazing. They look like they could chew through solid granite and wither oncoming foes with a sneer.

I, too, never realized the similarities but I definitely see them now.

The last time I bought one was 2017 becuase I needed the S-proof ASE that I missed from the 2017 Congratulations set. And that's when the packaging was remotely worth the price.

Unless there is an exclusive ASE offered in the LESPS in the future, there is no reason whatsoever for me to purchase one, given the price and the (in my opinion) lackluster packaging.

I do not mean to belittle or offend anyone who collects these, I have have a few LESPS sets myself and I DO enjoy them. I also do like the OGP. And I TOTALLY get the "I have every one in the series so far so I have to keep going" mentality.

As I've always said, collect what makes you happy!

The experts know what they're talking about. I am pretty impressed with it and would likely keep it since I don't have any notes like that, but yeah, it would just be a placeholder at that point. And at $20 your money is probably better used elsewhere in your collection. I would struggle to heed my own advice there.

There are plenty of us that still need that one.

I have the Mercanti book (1st edition IIRC) and it is informative and interesting. The first few chapters where Mercanti is talking about the coin program and his memoirs regarding it are the good stuff. Once it gets into the individual coins, it turns into more of a reference that you can get from any online source or other publication (i.e., mainly stats and figures). It is a good book to have in your collection if you are an avid ASE collector.

IMO, his simple, literal design did not create a new highwater mark for medallic art.

Lenz was a civil engineer by training...

Being one myself, that design definitely screams "civil engineer" to me! The trees and the clouds on the obverse are the about the only things that couldn't be drawn using a straight edge and the lettering is classic engineer script (all caps with the actual capitals being just larger captials). The reverse reminds me of a survey marker.

I do kind of enjoy the floating look of the house on the obverse... almost looks like it was photoshopped in, possibly due to the shadow under the house (caused by light source for the photo?)

Cool little note.

Also the slab label seems to be pretty ragged at the top, not PCGS' best effort there.

Agree with the other esteemed members here; it's either a chop mark or just someone having fun. 'Tis a spender. Thanks for sharing!

This note has a lot of wear. Spend it. Unless you need a temporary placeholder. Even if so, spend it.

There's something about uncut sheets, can't quite place my finger on it. Maybe it's just that it gives you a little bit of insight into the production process? And in this case, a window back into history. Very cool, jimbucks.
