I have the Mercanti book (1st edition IIRC) and it is informative and interesting. The first few chapters where Mercanti is talking about the coin program and his memoirs regarding it are the good stuff. Once it gets into the individual coins, it turns into more of a reference that you can get from any online source or other publication (i.e., mainly stats and figures). It is a good book to have in your collection if you are an avid ASE collector. |

Quote: IMO, his simple, literal design did not create a new highwater mark for medallic art.
Quote: Lenz was a civil engineer by training... Being one myself, that design definitely screams "civil engineer" to me! The trees and the clouds on the obverse are the about the only things that couldn't be drawn using a straight edge and the lettering is classic engineer script (all caps with the actual capitals being just larger captials). The reverse reminds me of a survey marker.
I do kind of enjoy the floating look of the house on the obverse... almost looks like it was photoshopped in, possibly due to the shadow under the house (caused by light source for the photo?) |
