Quote: Jovita Idar's especially, even if I need a magnifying glass to make out the smaller text
I am just giving an opinion and not being argumentative, but I thought them choosing this design did exactly opposite of honoring the person on the REV. I have heard several people online, and also my own family members, who saw one and right away said, Wow, that looks really weird. The other comments I have heard is how stupid it looks instead of just having a "normal" design.
We can all have opinions in the case of "artistic" expression.
But then I got to thinking, if this woman would have known someday she was to be honored by being put onto a US coin, I think she would have been happy. But if she had also been told the first impression people would have is how strange/off/dumb (terms I have seen/heard) the design looks instead of noticing her for what she was allegedly being honored for, then how would she feel?
The other coins, you first notice the design elements and the woman's name. This one people wonder what in the world is going on until they look close enough to see the wording is her clothing. Then the obvious statement comes...why? When the design should be making people curious as to who she was and what she did.
The comes the task of trying to figure out the words describing what the design is about inside the jumbled design of a dress they are in. I think she would ask why they just did not treat her like everyone else to emphasize who she was without needing to take the time to find a magnifying glass to figure it all out. Just my opinion.
I know a punch can cost somewhere around 340.00 for a simple one like that triangle. Have to wonder why anyone would bother with something so nondescript?
I always wondered what it would have been like to be sitting moon surface for 7 hours in the Lunar Module knowing you would be walking on the moon as the first man. So close to the biggest scientific achievement in human history, you can see the moon surface out your window, and yet have all the safety checks etc. to go through. That had to be the longest 7 hours anyone has ever spent!
Then there was MIke Collins. All possible communication with any living being totally shut off and being the furthest away from humanity anyone had ever been during his flights around the back side of the moon. I think that is the ultimate definition in modern times of he word lonely!
Very detailed pressed penny design. But only 2 smokestacks and not 4 like the Titanic. Artist's rendition to fit the coin size maybe?
My son starred in a big city play for the Titanic and so has enjoyed the history, frequents the museum in Orlando, FL nd every once in awhile shares interesting info concerning the ship/sinking. He took me to the museum once and it was amazing. They have a showcase with coins and currency recovered from the wreck as well as many other things.
Cool. My one son and family live in the Utah desert. He once took us out in the desert to show us where a dino footprint is in the rock like the one pictured on your penny. It's not marked or anything sp pretty much just a few locals know of it.
I like the leaves. Funny when I saw the Maple Leaf one I thought of Canada. hen a thought hit me. It would be funny to see someone make a counterstamp of Queen Elizabeth II or the King and counterstamp US pennies. Sort of an international friendship token like the set the int made years ago of an ASE and a Brit 1 ounce silver coin.
I like the anchors. I have not seen mine in ages, but think it is either a 1941 or a 1944. My grandfather had gotten it in his penny changers he had in his laundromats in the 50s before I was born. Mine is the size of your 1951 and positioned above the date. But mine lettering and anchor are not as thin as your 1951.
