Sap, I want to thank you for your participation and contributions. I'm very impressed with your Florin. That is what "Conservation" is all about.
But I'm even more impressed with your patience. These last few weeks I've not been able to get to my computer to make a timely response. That is not my usual nature, but a temporary health problem. One wrong move and I yelp like a puppy that has had his tail stepped on. But I can laugh because it is only temporary, and not life threatening.
Thank you again. |

Thank you Sap. I'm hoping for a few more comments, just to get a feel for general opinions. In the interest of fun, let me add a few more. Situation is the same, destination is my type set. Nothing cost more than $0.15 USD, and if in fine condition, would not bring more than $1. And should I ever sell a cleaned coin, I would do so with full disclosure. More likely, I would give it to an interested youngster.

I very much enjoy working on coins to improve their condition. However it is not a quick or easy skill to learn. Nor does it have much of a payback for coins worth less than $1K. Your time is better spent training for the NBA, the Indy 500 or becoming a Rock Star. Still, none of my TPG submissions have come back in a body bag. This effort took about 7 hours and converted a 10 cent coin into a 20 cent coin. Do you really want to go down that road?

Is It OK To Ask Dealers To See If They Have Coins Available Without Buying Anything.

I don't mean to be obtuse or contentious, but I am inclined to think that you are not communicating very well with your B&M dealer.
It is a relationship and it takes time, but is well worth the effort. You already know the basics of dealer/collector negotiations, but for the newer numismatists let me offer a few suggestions.
If the shop is busy, that is not the time to ask your dealer to search in the back room. You can always leave him a written list.
Don't act like a big shot - you aren't. If you have three grand in your pocket and came in to buy Morgans, and a young couple walks in with two children full of questions about how to get started in coin collecting (and $12,) just step back, greet them kindly and let the dealer recruit a family to his business.
Don't be afraid to tell your dealer how much you are willing to spend. i.e. "I'm looking to upgrade some of my Large Cents and can spend up to $50."
I don't know if any of these suggestions are helpful, but they work for me. My local dealer has my complete admiration and support, and has always treated me with respect. When I walk into the shop, he and his employees will show me many coins that they know are of interest to me, and I never walk in unless I can make a purchase, even a small one.

There is no consensus on the definitions of cleaning, restoring or conserving. Each coin must be treated individually. I enjoy the process but it takes time to learn.

Just because you don't understand the reason for the high price, doesn't mean there isn't a good reason. I recently purchased a Morgan Dollar for $800 that had a book value of less than $200. There were only two recorded coins of this VAM. One belonged to the man that discovered the coin, and one in my collection. I now own two of the three known examples. One being of the highest known condition. |

The world class photographers on this web site helped me put together a modestly priced set-up and taught me how to use it.
Sometimes the identification of a VAM may be assisted by recognizing the file lines or die cracks.

Quote: I have never been one for alcohol, but there is also "100 Proof". Perhaps that is when the drinker is highly polished?! I vaguely recall some information about alcoholic drinks being tested for burning rates or flash points to "prove" the alcoholic content. Now who can still do geometric proofs learned in high school? |

Quote: Stick around here for a while and accumulate enough posts to make yourself a person that can sell right here.
And while you are doing that, read a few posts in the photography section. Almost everybody learns something, almost every camera is capable of taking better pictures. Sometimes it is just as simple as using the flash and focus. |
