I remembered an older thread I had participated in here. Some were looking for Celtic coinage references, and while not many exist, a brand new book is out based on some of the references I gave.

https://goccf.com/t/443447#3831096

The new book is discussed here in the latest E-sylum:
https://www.coinbooks.org/v28/esylu...tml#article2

and even more books here:
https://www.greenlightpublishing.co...atID=1560406

also see the "Liz's Shop" at https://celticcoins.com/ to see a selection of Celtic coins for sale.

p.s. I have no interest in these links and sites other than as an interested researcher myself.

Glad I could help, and I was right in your situation a few decades ago when I just started to understand VAMs. I was lucky and got a chance to take the very first VAM ANA Summer Seminar held, (also before the TOP 100 book was out and known). My instructors were Dr. Michael Fey and Jeff Oxman, the best teachers we could hope for at the time. I learned so much and it was great as VAM collecting was not really popular at all. In fact at the summer seminar I was offered a chance to buy an 1878 VAM-44 slabbed ANACS (little white holder) MS62 DMPL for $2.5K I passed, DOH! Today? Probably a $35K coin. I also bought an 1878-S long arrow nock from a junk box at $7.25. I ended up trading it to Larry Briggs, who eventually figured out I had the VAM # wrong and it became a new discovery piece. VAM-72, another Dang-It coin. But I've also had a bunch of success too, I got to help contribute to the 1st edition 8TF book by Jeff Oxman and Les Harnett was as good as any coin finds. Keep searching brother the rewards will come like your name unimpossible!

Opps meant to say a 14.10 (no a) sorry. I need much better in focus photos to tell for sure if possible to reshoot. Try to get the coin perpendicular to the lens flat across the entire coin so it stays in focus.

I'm seeing the reverse clash does not line up with the bottom of the N see this photo of a VAM-9 in comparison.

on your coin it appears to intersect the point of the N of IGWT

I still think it's the VAM 14.1a the rough patch above the M in UNUM on mine is almost nonexistent. I have a few of them I will upload so you can compare.

Once you see a VAM-9 reverse there is no mistaking it, I've found 2 in the wild, but it took a lot of looking and both were found before the TOP 100 VAM book came out and popularized this segment of collecting Morgans (Late 1999/2000).

That right feather is very coma shaped and really stands out with a curve. It almost looks more like a blob of extra metal than an engraved feather.

Sorry the photos are 7-8 years old and were taken through the Mylar holders. I was shooting them for insurance reasons, I don't have the coins at hand now they are in the bank deposit box. The photos should be clickable to enlarge each as well.

I took the obverse image and tried a quick color correction based on the prongs likely being white like an NGC holder. As close as I could in a quick and dirty way.

I think the coin is close to a full Red but likely gets an RB from me. The marks on the high points definitely trouble me, but it's really tough to tell from these photos how bad they are.

I'll subjectively guess a grade of MS64RB based on my own color correction and guessing the coin is actually nicer in hand that the photos show.

Not a VAM-9 Check the VAM-14.1a or 14.10a

I know a bit late to this thread, but if you are still looking...

See the Ed Fuhrman books here is my review of one of them.

The NNP has both editions of Cohens book in PDF for free, and there is always the Manley Half Cent Die States for advanced collectors, check out the Missouri Cabinet Collection auction catalog by Goldmans, there you can see some of the finest known examples of each variety and date in the series.

Neat book which I had not seen previously. I did know Larry Gentile through the ANA Summer Seminar briefly IIRC, it was a couple decades ago. Nice guy and wanted to learn and teach coins all the time, Larry was a YN advisor for many years, I do not recall if I ever met Jeffery Terry. I would guess Jeffery was likely mentored by Mr. Gentile as a YN.

So glad to see you back fortcollins! I've missed your insights especially into the Buffalo nickel world. I had even asked a "what happened to" post aabout you and a few other missing members awhile back!

I'm not around as often as I used to be and my collecting interests have shifted towards 18th century Provincial Tokens, but I still pursue my beloved 2 cents and colonial coins as well as numismatic literature.

Happy Retirement to you.

I used to do what Hondo does, but now I use an X-acto knife to cut around the edge of the circle on the Mylar, usually first pushing the coin to one side, before making the cut, I only need about a 1/4 or 1/3 around the circle before I can push the coin out from the other side - always onto a towel or one of my jewelry trays (padded surface). No chance of damage by staple that way.

I also never toss them into my own trash, after I'm sure there is no identifying marks on them that can trace the holders back to me, I put all the empty holders into a small paper bag and toss it at the gas station trash can or Starbucks, somewhere I am not known, nor a regular customer. Don't need someone to see all the coin holders in my trash can and think the house is full of rare coins. Better safe than sorry.

I do not but an interesting question. If I had to guess I would say around 2600 total from the 63,000+ that were produced just under 5% or so.

Here is the press release:

https://www.greysheet.com/news/stor...rs-galleries

Purchase price of $92,000,000 while the entity of just Stacks/Bowers coins had a profit of $46,100,000 in the last fiscal year. Not too shabby.

I don't think much will change in the operations of the coin side of the business. Just big news in the coin business world.
