There are endless possibilities.
If there is a particular coin series you like then I would research the key date possibilities within that series.
As for me I would consider a key date lincoln wheat cent or a good quality large cent.
Also if you believe gold will go up in the future (which I do)then you may want to buy a certified St. Gaudens or a Liberty Double Eagle. This will be a high AU to low MS piece and will take most of your $2,000 budget. |

Sorry dude thats a fair price in my opinion. I paid $850 for a PCGS G-4 about two years ago. Go ahead and jump if this is what you have been looking for. |

I agree its a very nice cent. Love the toning and the strong strike. Its hard to tell if that is some rub on the lapel and shoulder. If MS I would say MS63BN. May be AU58 slider |

I agree with the previous grades and would add that these coins along with the shield nickels are some of my favorites because of all the character they have i.e. die cracks, clashes ect. |

Wil,
Buying uncertified 1916 "D" Mercury Dimes is a dangerous thing to engage in. For the $895.00 that you have spent on these two coins you could get a certified G-4 1916-D Merc Dime.
Having said that your dimes may be legit. The bottom of the D ion coin 1 is bent and is a concern. I cannot see the bottom of the D in coin 2.
Attached is a photo of a certified 1916-D with mint mark that I used to own. You can use this photo to compare yours too. Others may be along later with more expertise than I and weigh in.
Bottom line though unless you are an expert in this coin, and you may be, I would strongly suggest buying only certified specimens as this is a highly counterfeited coin.

Wow very nice LWC. Love the toning.
the scrapes on the lapel may limit it to MS64 but the toning more than makes up for it. I would pay MS65 money for it and wouldnt be surprised if it went MS65.

I have only purchased a handful of gold coins and the ones I have purchased are a couple St. Gaudens, $10 Indian, and a $5.00 Liberty. Most of these were purchased at a modest premium over the spot as they are commone date pieces.
For example I have a PCGS MS61 St. Gaudens that I paid $125.00 over spot for from a dealer that I do business with. My personal opinion is that I prefer to buy gold coins that have some numismatic value and I dont mind paying a modest/reasonable premium for it.
However a CCF member was recently selling a 2006 Gold Buffalo for a reasonable price and had I been in a position to purchase it right now I would have.
I am in this for the long haul so I believe that the price I or you pay now for gold whether its bullion or a common date numismatic gold piece will be eclipsed in the future. |
