I think this Columbian Expo half has some nice toning under way.

The coins are believed to have been hidden away during the Great Depression and they include a '64 Kennedy and a whole lot of Franklins. Okay . . .

Here are some photos I took at the show today.

The line for gold Kennedy Halves, at about 8:00 a.m., began just outside the convention hall and stretched outside and around the corner:

Some of the folks waiting to buy a gold Kennedy (one guy told me there were 17 people in his "crew"):

At the Museum Showcase, the 1922 matte-proof, high-relief Peace Dollar:

At the Museum Showcase, the Brasher Doubloon:

"We're buying Kennedys!"

Employees of the United States Mint do an inspirational team cheer before the exhibits open to the public:

"Hurrah!"

I guess I should consider myself fortunate. My trip to the show on Wednesday will cost me exactly $4.80, round-trip fare on the Chicago El. And I'll buy a sandwich and soft drink at a convenience store before going so I won't have to shell out the ridiculous prices for food at the show!

I plan to be at the World's Fair of Money; it's just an El ride away for me. I'm thinking of buying two gold Kennedys, one flip and one to keep.

I love that holed Walking Liberty half. Of all the places a hole could have been punched, they had to choose poor Liberty's head!

I picked up this 1885-O Morgan because I like the toning:

They don't call it Gold County for nothing, apparently. What an amazing find.

During my lunch break on Friday, I went to the bank and bought ten rolls of cents, hoping to find some wheats, varieties, or other things of interest. It was only after I got back to the office that I discovered that every last stinkin' one of them was a brand-new uncirculated 2013-D.

Yes, and I wonder if something similar is going on with the 2013 silver proof set?

Last fall I bought the 14-coin silver proof set from the U.S. Mint for $53.95. I just noticed that the Mint has sold out of the set and the set is now selling for as much as 80 or 90 dollars on eBay.

What gives? Is the Kennedy half driving the price increase? I saw a couple of 2013 Kennedys broken out of the set selling on eBay for 30 bucks or more, and I understand that the 2012 Kennedy is commanding a pretty nice premium. Or are there other coins in the 2013 set that are driving the price as well?

srs77: Is that a quirk of the photograph, or is there doubling in the motto of that 2014 silver Eagle?

About a year ago I came upon a dozen cents or so in a pool of dirty, oily water in a gutter and I was thrilled to pick them up. So I guess there's no coin I wouldn't pick up.

Monetarily: My 2006 1 oz. Gold Buffalo. Sentimentally: a nicely toned Morgan dollar that belonged to my mom and to her mom before her.

Some things I've acquired over the past few months. From top, left to right: 2010-2012 silver proof ATB quarters; Gettysburg 5 oz. ATB; 1883 CC Morgan from the GSA Hoard; PF-66 '64 proof Kennedy half; a pair of nicely toned Morgans (toned on the reverse); some Barber and Walking Liberty halves; a roll of common-date SLQ's; a roll of common-date 90% Washington quarters.

Today at Walgreen's, the cashier apologized to my wife because he was out of quarters and had to give her a '67 Kennedy.
