So far I've contacted Heritage and Great Collections; both companies are interested. GC has estimated a slightly higher value for the set. My initial estimate for total value is looking a bit optimistic. Maximum total proceeds is likely to be closer to $140K.
Both companies say they would evaluate the coins for upgrade potential and possibility for CAC approvals. Any coins that upgrade or sticker could obviously attract higher bids.
I will discuss seller's fees with both companies. Obviously I'd prefer to minimize those fees and the firm with the lower cost will have an edge when it comes time to make our decision. |

Hello all, I've been asked to help liquidate a collection of certified US coins. I'd guess individual coins are worth from $1000 to $30,000 each. Total value should exceed $200K.
Can anyone report on their positive results from selling through Heritage, Great Collections, Stack's, etc.? I'd really appreciate hearing from experienced sellers.
Thanks! |

Looks like a legitimate MS coin to me. Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers appear to have intact mint frost, with no obvious rub. Some slight muting of luster in the fields, not incompatible with a mint state grade. Contact marks would limit it to a 62. A very appealing $10 Liberty I'd be proud to own! |

Obvious luster loss in the obverse fields suggests AU-58 would be the highest possible grade. However, lots of early gold coins with similar luster quality get into MS slabs. Eye appeal is very good. I'd agree that NGC MS-62 is likely. It's a lovely coin regardless. The reverse is especially nice. |

PCGS has the value for an MS-65+ RD example at $51,500. The Eagle Eye PhotoSeal and CAC stickers might help this awesome coin exceed even that amount.
Regarding that 1856 Flying Eagle on Hibid: lack of certification is a red flag. When a key date like this is offered raw there is usually a reason. Some kind of "altered surface" problem wouldn't surprise me. |

I got one of those mail solicitations for donation that contains nickels. To my surprise one of the four coins was a 1942-P war nickel. Roll hunting for silver hasn't been productive lately. Maybe the solution is to just wait and have random silver coins delivered in the mail!

ANACS would be your best choice for low-cost authentication. With a likely grade of "VF details, cleaned" I'd expect a sale price of maybe $700. If it graded problem-free (unlikely) it could fetch $1000 or more. |

If the other 1875-CC you posted makes VG-8 this one has to be F-12 at least. I guess the obverse might have some surface contamination but otherwise the coin looks problem-free. If you buy it perhaps you could send it to PCGS for their conservation service. Or, you could crack it out, treat with acetone, and keep it raw or submit to PCGS and see how they like it. |

I think I read somewhere that native California gold typically contained over 90% gold, mixed with silver and copper. Each batch of gold used for coinage would be adjusted down to 90% fineness by adding copper. The resulting coins would all have correct gold content plus variable levels of silver and copper. |

This coin has significant luster loss in the fields which would suggest an AU-58 grade to me. However, the high points don't show any visible wear or the color change I'd expect if the coin circulated. The strike is very strong and there are many small (but no large) contact marks. NGC settled on a grade of MS-61.
BH1964, the obverse line is pretty straight. I'd suspect it represents a die scratch rather than a crack.
Thanks for your comments! |
