Hi, The N is re-punched/repaired in the REGINA. In the obv 2 of this type the N in Regina has no foot so in a small population they were manually repaired.
Without seeing the other side it could be struck through some piece of metal. I don't see any track marks or gauge extra metal you might see if it was dug in from one direction to another.
Hi folks, I think I found another 1891 large cent repaired N variety. I have had some recent luck to pick up a couple nice ones recently so if anyone can confirm and has interest it can be found in this link.
This gentlemen I know is quite the colllector so he might be interested in 1881 SSN in whatever grade. He is well know for what they call "low ball" collection of US coins he has on PCGS registry.
Hi folks, so an acquaintance of mine here in the US is on the lookout for 2 pretty difficult to find coins. 1 an 1859 inverted 9 and 2 an 1881 single serif N. He is putting together a collection of varieties in AU58 condition . If anyone can help us out it would be greatly appreciated!
Hello to the moderator. I put this in Canadian varieties because I did not even know there was a specific location for give aways. I actually couldn't even locate that thread when I looked after so maybe folks won't even see it!
Hello and happy holidays! I happened to find another 1891 repunched N variety this week. I have been chasing these down for years and just picked up my 5th. So in the spirit of the holidays I am going to pass one on to a variety collector. Just message me if you have not been able to find one to add to your collection. I will pick a random person to send the coin to asap. Attached is an example of the type of coin you will receive and is the latest I found. You can see my previous posts for photos of one you might get.
Wondering if anyone else was watching this one early this week and had thoughts on grades for this set? Based on the photos do you think the seller did well?
From the feedback, my best bet is to call them later and ask specifically about the 1891 repaired N. Its not about the grade for that coin its more about the hunt for one finally in decent shape.
I am about to submit a few coins to PCGS for grading. I am curious if they have a standard they follow designating the coins. Below is the list of coins and I just need to know if they will title it their own way or do I need to tell them what to write.
1. Canada large cent 1888 UNC 2. Canada large cent 1891 LDLL Obv 2 - Repaired N see 2011 Charlton page 328 3. Canada large cent 1859 narrow 9 - repunched 9 # 5
Very cool, this is the first I have heard of this variety. Another coin to hunt down. Any ideas on percentages vs the standard 1888? I know the 1891 Repair N is rare and I have only seen a few.
