For those offering history as a source of information, I have to disagree. Our dependence on technology and our ignorance of everything else (farming, hunting, etc.) is what separates us from our ancestors.
Also the fact that when we look at disasters of old we see the big picture without seeing the immediate ramifications. In modern times it will only take a week for people with large stashes of silver to die of starvation because they shop at Whole Foods once a day and have no food in their house.
Yes PM's will eventually become a source of trading. As mentioned in the show Revolution it was 15 years later and there was a well established barter system. It's the first couple of months with no governmental assistance that worries me.
Sidenote: I had to stop watching the show. I'm a gun guy and there were too many mistakes and "oh come on that's dumb" moments for me

Quote: The Katrina disaster bears out to me that PMs have zero bearing on surviving societal collapse...period. Exactly!
Quote: So unless you are able to buy and sell guns and ammo for trade and / or investment, perhaps they are not a good investment, maybe PM's better. I have several guns that are extras solely for the purpose of trading. For me as a collectors of firearms I do it as a hobby and an investment. It's just like coins. If it can be done right then you can turn a nice profit.
But when SHTF a cheapo handgun will be worth it's weight in gold for food.
This topic got way more interesting then I thought it would |

Even if it were just North America and lets say the power goes out for 3 months. We as a people are so dependent on electricity that everything would fall apart.
When food is a precious commodity I seriously doubt that any group would be willing to accept gold as payment for it or other supplies.
In all of the times of old, gold was always used, bartered, or stolen because there was always a larger force at play. Imagine no electricity, running water, or transportation. A nice extra shotgun is worth a whole lot more in trade then a shiny metal coin. Even if there was a large group of survivors or military remnents. Survival will only depend on thing that can keep you alive
But it can always been used to clean your laundry a little better |

......for the Zombie Apocalypse

Ok so the Zombie aspect is a little far fetched. On a serious note I think a lot of people here are investing solely in the concept of a precious metal that in the event of an economic and social collapse....will be worthless.
Sure gold and silver are nice to hoard up and buy low to sell high but it's a gamble just like stocks. If the power goes out then that money goes with it.
If you are wanting to do this as an investment to retire on then by all means go for it. But do keep in mind that if a local or global catastrophe ever happens then Food, Water, Guns, and Supplies are what make a good investment for both personal use and trading opportunities.
This is merely an opinion from the other side of the coin and I have no wish for this to turn into any type of political discussion |

Quote: That is the purpose of having a family like CCF where everyone can draw upon each others expertise to save time. True but always relying on other people to do 100% of the work will never really help you in the long run.
Pretty sure the grades and pricing of the coins on NGC's website only reflect actual slabbed coins by NGC and in no way would reflect the pricing of yours.
The 1st coins pictures are fine for a basic assessment but the other 2 we'd need a little higher quality pictures to properly grade them. |
