Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) made major contributions across the fields of chemistry, microbiology and medicine. He was the first to demonstrate chemical chirality (left and right handed molecules), proved the germ theory of disease and developed vaccines for rabies and anthrax.

Quote: Can't help wondering how much longer the die lasted... With such extensive cracking, it seems likely that it didn't produce very many more strikes. However you might find an earlier strike from this die where the cracks haven't progressed so much. |

On the reverse of the yen, it looks like there is a scratch \ running across the central part of the sun.
On the reverse of the trade dollar there appears to be pin holes directly across from each other at 5 and 11 o'clock. The 5 o'clock area may also have some residual solder. Evidently the piece was mounted, possibly to be worn as jewelry.
Edit Looking more closely at the yen, there may also be a damaged denticle and pin hole on the reverse between 6 and 7 o'clock. |

Use the Pixlr website to load the file and then crop the image close to the coin. When you are done editing, save the image in jpg format with a meaningful file name. It will tell you the file size before you save it. If it is greater than 300k, reduce the image quality from high to medium or use the slide bar to get it down to 300k. |

I just realized that your 10 centavos coin is dated 1945. The Americans fought hard that year to retake the islands from the Japanese, who finally surrendered in August, 1945. So your coin may have come along with General MacArthur's troops for use in the newly liberated areas. |

Quote: I only wish this one was in better shape. it is silver though.. It may have been underwater in Manila Bay for a while. Silver coins were hidden at sea before the occupying Japanese army arrived during WWII. |

Quote: A couple of examples from French Indochina. War time issues like these, minted locally in Hanoi, had some quality issues. These are historically very interesting pieces, perhaps struck under the watchful eyes of Japanese occupation officials? |
