I really find this a challenging series to grade. I've learned a lot here on CCF, in that die states and strike quality really affect appearance, in addition to wear. That being said, I see the horn pushing a F, but I look at separation between rim and Buffalo head. I don't know if that's an accurate measure, but it's what I use to determine a VG. Because of that little separation and blending of rim into Liberty on the obverse, I say VG-08. |

Nice coin. I'm not sure about the AU and up grades as I don't generally purchase this series at that level. However, it seems to me that a lot of the higher end grades consider remaining luster, which often means it needs to be seen in hand- at least for me. I'm in the AU camp on this one but have to leave the specifics to the experts. |

Hello and Happy Holidays to all!
I'm a classical coin collector who occasionally drifts into ancients, however..My brother-in-law got me this for Christmas because he knows I'm interested in the Civil War and coins. I don't own any paper money or banknotes, so I'm at a loss as to where to begin. I would appreciate any information on this: condition, value, where to find more info online, etc.
I thought this might be the place to start.
Thanks!

I was surprised to learn that NGC doesn't guarantee authenticity. I discovered that while trying to understand their grading system. Actually, buying slabbed coins was the approach I thought to take to try and avoid counterfeits. Anyway, this is my first purchase.

I have been primarily a US classic coin collector. I also collect a bit of world silver mainly from the 19th-20th century. Recently, I've become more interested in ancient coins, especially Roman imperials. I got to see some great coins recently at the Baltimore show.
What's your advice for getting into this field of collecting? I've got a few books and see a bunch of links here. Any specific books, sites or tips?

I appreciate the feedback and comments. Admittedly, of course, I'm the owner, but. I can't see F15 at all on this one. I think it's an easy VF-20. Looking at Photograde, slabbed examples and right now reading ANA Grading Standards.
According to ANA:
VF-20
Obverse: More than 1/2 details still show in hair (easily); Drapery and lower curls are worn but bold (check); Ear, clasp and curls are plainly visible (more than plainly visible in fact)
Reverse: Head and leg are worn, but some feathers visible ( more than some- even the talon is detailed); Most details in wings are clear (for sure); Motto is complete ( yes, but a bit weakly struck); Half of horizontal shield lines are separated (more like 80%).
No distracting marks (ok, I'll try the acetone), no hairlines, rim is pretty decent. I don't see how this grades any lower than 20; in fact I was of the opinion it was higher when I bought it. Nice uniform cameo and toning.
I'm interested to hear the reasoning for the F15 grades. Thanks |
