Inherited Canadian Silver Dollars

I had a similar situation ten years ago. I did not technically inherit the silver dollars but my dad gave me 12 different "common" silver dollars, some mint some not. He was getting on in years and these were duplicates. He did not have a complete set himself, his main love was 50 cent pieces.
At that point I only collected smaller denomination Canadian coins. The only silver dollar I owned was a 1967. After looking at them for a few months, I decided to try to collect all years 1935-1967. Using mainly eBay I built up my collection over a couple of years, finally completing my collection by purchasing a 1948 at a coin show.
My dad has since passed on, but my silver dollar collection is now my pride and joy and I think of my dad every time I look at those coins. Well, I am rambling on and not really answering your question. I could have sold those coins at the time for melt value but I am glad that I kept them. |

Typically held twice a year but none in the last two years. I wondered if any of you attended or have recently attended a coin show with dealers in Canada.
I went on the first day with my granddaughter just after 11 A.M. and it was busier than I have seen it in the last eight years I have been going. Alberta relaxed many COVID restrictions March 1 so that might have had a lot to do with it. I heard some dealers talking about how busy it was. |

Nice to see. I started collecting nickels in my youth. It wasn't until I was 60 that I completed my set, purchasing the 1925 and '26 Far. It is a nice sense of accomplishment.

Finding in loose change could take forever. I found what I needed quicker by going into a bank and buying 10 or 15 rolls at a time and then looking through them. Still no guarantees but I found what I wanted in a couple months of doing that every couple weeks. It also gave me a chance to upgrade other $1 and $2 coins as my collection of these denominations is not uncirculated, other than ones I had to buy from sets. |

I had a 2006 no logo no p magnetic cent I bought in 2014 for $43 including shipping on eBay - advertised "high grade". When I decided in 2020 I was not that interested in varieties, I sold it on eBay auction for $104 including shipping charges. I have not paid attention to what they are going for this year. |

Living two provinces over, I have only dealt with them by phone for coin supplies and post 1966 coins like 50 cent pieces and coins like 1997 quarter not issued for circulation and that type of thing. Helpful by phone and orders processed accurately and delivered in a reasonable amount of time.

Congratulations on completing your Canada Small Cents collection. Mine looks quite a bit like yours, only difference is, I spent a lifetime on it. Very few of my pre 1960 coins are mint. I started at about age twelve with pennies and nickels to get a badge for Scouting in the 1960s. I turned sixty the year after the last one cent rolled off the presses.
Since the 1960s I have collected other denominations over the years but there is still a soft spot in my heart for the small cents. Like you, I recently (this month), added a slabbed coin to my collection. It is a 1920 MS64 RB, PCGS graded coin that I bid for on eBay. I'd post a picture but I don't want to steal your thunder. Like your sentiments, it seems extravagant, as it cost me more than any other coin I purchased for my cents collection. I am glad I got it as it sums up what Canadian Small Cents means to me.

A few years ago I spent a bit of money to get the last silver dollar I needed - the 1948. I could have spent the money on non circulating coloured coins but I'd still have a hole in my silver dollar collection. I am enjoying looking at my complete set. Hopefully in many years, my grandchildren will come close to getting my money back on the 1948 if they sell should they not collect coins; but I would think my 1948 will keep value more than a bunch of novelty coins from the Mint.
Either way, collect what you enjoy. |

I am with kanga on this one too. I would only do "buy it now" if I had a bunch of identical coins like a roll of a given year from a bank roll where they are all basically the same. I don't like to do "best offer" because I hate to haggle. Others might love that aspect. |

Just picked up another 10 rolls of coins from the bank and found seven of the 2019s. Two were the 16 serrations, five of the 14 serrations. Once again, I am from Calgary. I still have not found a 2020 regular polar bear $2 coin yet. That is the reason for my search. I know they will eventually show up but by November I usually have one of a current year. |
