Here was an interesting find at our local Meijer store, 17 Russian coins and two pieces of plastic U.S. play money.

We looked up the exchange rate and discovered that all the Russian coins are worth about nine cents U.S.

I purchased this nice, circulated 1898 Barber Quarter a couple of years ago. I took it out today and examined it under magnification.

On the reverse I noticed a blob of metal at the base of the D in UNITED that goes up to the beginning of the ribbon with E PLURIBUS UNUM on it. I have checked the other Barber Quarters in my collection and there is nothing there in this spot.

Is this a cud of some sort? I'm sure it's nothing major, but it is interesting.

Thanks for any help rendered.

1853 PCGS Large Cent - AU Details For Smoothing But What About The Color?

I'm posting this one hoping to learn something about how TPGs grade.

This is not my coin. I saw it on eBay.

This 1853 Braided Hair Large Cent is in an "Surfaces Smoothed - AU Details" holder. The coin appears to be nearly full red but the slab doesn't say anything about "Altered Color".

Does this mean that PCGS feels the red is original or is this the by-product of the smoothing process?

I'd appreciate any insights. This one has me confused. Thanks.

It's 2.31 grams on my scale but it is probably off a bit since a clad dime weighs 2.27 grams according to the Red Book.

I came across this 1978 Roosevelt with sections of the outer layer missing on both sides. The coin has some issues which leads me to think what I am seeing is simply post mint damage but I haven't before seen a clad Roosevelt with sections of the outer layer gone, so I thought I'd ask what others think.

Opinions? Thanks.

It still does have some luster when held and turned in the light, especially on the reverse, but it's not strong.

Thanks again for the replies. The grading thing is still hit and miss for me, especially on brown coins, even though I've been collecting for 55 years.

I just received this nice brown 1925-D Lincoln Cent. The Ebay seller didn't give it a grade. From his photos I thought it was either a high AU or perhaps a low grade MS.

The surfaces are smooth and there is just a hint of mint red remaining in the obverse legend in the ST of TRUST.

I took two photos of the obverse at different angles, then rotated. The light brown on Lincoln's jaw doesn't show itself when I look at the coin under magnification, so it's more an effect of the lighting.

Your thoughts? Thanks.

Nice finds. I, too, have learned to check for coins standing upright along the edge of the reject tray.

It's a normal "S" mint mark. The apparent "line" on the right side is just glare from the light I used.

It's actually a 1947-S. The seller had it listed as a 1947-D and I guess I didn't look at the mint mark closely.

I have thought about that. I read up on clips before bidding. The 1944 has the weakness on the spot of the reverse across from the clip, which my reading said was a sign of authenticity, but I am far from an expert.

I don't normally collect error coins, but I came across these two higher grade Lincoln Wheat Cents on eBay and put in a successful bid for them. Both have nice clips on them.

I especially like the 1947-D. It's a beautiful mint state coin and an error.

Thanks for giving me a place to share them.

The Latest "Ancient" Coin From The Roman Fort At Vindolanda

I am a retired Lutheran pastor. Back in 2010, when I was still in the parish, I was granted a sabbatical. I'd first read of Vindolana in an archaeology magazine from 2004 and thought this would be a great experience for part of my sabbatical.

I was an ancient history major in college and had longed dreamed of participating in a dig.

I read up on the excavations there, applied and was accepted. My wife and daughters came along. We were fortunate to rent Codley Gate, a delightful stone house right at the base of the hill on which Vindolanda sits. There was a Roman mile stone on the other side of the narrow lane, just across from where we stayed.

I excavated a room from a third century barracks my first week. My dig partner had the great luck of digging up a quern stone with the name "AFRICANVS" on it. The second week I worked on a paved open area from the second century and part of what might have been a fourth century Christian sanctuary on the site.

I would love to go back some day.

For two weeks in July 2010 I had the privilege of being a volunteer at the excavations at the Roman Fort on Vindolanda near Hadrian's Wall in northern England. This experience was one of the highlights of my life.

During my time there, I found four coins. They were a dupondius of Trajan, a denarius of Septimius Severus, a Victorinus antoninianus and a centenionalis of Constans.

I still receive the monthly email newsletter from the Vindolana Trust.

I got a chuckle at the short article in this month's newsletter highlighting some of the recent items found during excavations. One shows someone holding a coin. When I enlarged it, curious to see what sort of Roman bronze it was, I got a good chuckle to discover is looks like a corroded 1/2 Pence of Elizabeth II from the 1980s. I guess not all finds at archaeological sites are old finds.

Ebay Requiring Shipping Before Seller Receives Payment?

I heard back again from the seller.

He has been selling on Ebay for 25 years and has over 1600 positive feedbacks. This still sounds strange to me that they are saying he has to ship the coins before receiving payment from Ebay. I sold on Ebay for thirteen years and never experienced anything like this.

Here is what he wrote:

To all current buyers, I did talk to someone in customer service and she verified that they would not be transferring my money. 25 years with ebay means nothing to them. This is the first time Ebay has ever withheld my money, insisting that they will pay me my money later after you have received the items, then they will interview or survey you and then decide whether or not to pay me. Ebay has never worked this way in the past. If I do not get paid, I will not ship. This is degrading abusive treatment and I will not accept this. I will cancel/refund all sold items and cancel current listings. If by tomorrow morning, Sunday 2/2/2025 this isn't complete, it means they have stopped me and won't allow me to do this. At that time, you will have to ask for a refund yourself.

Sorry for the whole situation. All ebay had to do is pay me my money, as agreed 26 years ago when I joined.
