I didn't think it was a 'bargain' for 400 dollars to be honest. But I felt the need to get that one in hand, get it graded and give it proper treatment for the popular rarity it is. It's hard to believe this one ended up here in Korea, holed and unnoticed, after so many years.
I saw this one up for about 20 USD on a Korean numismatic forum along with well worn Washington silver quarters. Unfortunately one guy was quicker than me and I thought he had cherrypicked it. I emailed him, thinking he'd be aware of the variety, and offered him about 400 USD which would've sounded like a reasonable offer, and he accepted. But to think of it now, I doubt that he was knowledgeable enough to be conscious of what he bought, because he's one of those 'hoarders' not collectors who would gladly purchase overpriced cull US silver coinage and various foreign coins listed on the forum. So at the end it's not really a cherrypick. But I feel happy enough to have 'discovered' another specimen of this elusive variety in the most unexpected place!
I'll update with high-resolution pics when I get it in hand, but these are the seller's original pics.

How Can A Coin Only 2 Years Old And Badly Stained Still Be Graded A 70?

Some types of bullion silver are especially prone to staining or developing ugly milk spots and haze even inside a slab. Storage inside a slab does not mean eternal preservation in pristine state; careful storage of the slab itself is crucial. For a rather expensive example, a 1963 PCGS PR70 memorial cent developed some spots while inside the slab and PCGS, in accordance with their grading guarantee, bought the coin back for 40 grand. It would have been hilarious and laughable to see that coin be traded for tens of thousands of dollars for years to come, just because the slab reads 70 while the coin really isn't anymore. |

That is an exciting error for sure, and the price is another wow factor without a doubt. Seems like these Korean Empire errors are getting the attention they rightfully deserve. Brockages are called "eum-ta error" or simply "eum-ta" in Korean. It literally translates to "negative strike."
I thought you might be interested in this example: https://m.blog.naver.com/ruler01/220220121089 a Gwangmu 2 (1898)1/4 Yang with a Brockage on the other side of the coin (although labeled as Obverse, too). It was sold raw for 220,000 won (approx. $200) in 2014 on a Korean numismatic forum and reappeared as slabbed, in 2015, for sale, although not sold.
Another error you might be interested in: https://m.blog.naver.com/PostView.n...50640;#47084; Gwangmu 6 (1902) 5 Fun, double struck. Happy collecting. :) |

to the forum. There were no $20 gold pieces minted in silver with the Morgan design. What you've got is a fantasy piece (essentially a "fake"), or a $20 also known as a Double Eagle which is in gold not silver, or a 1895 Morgan dollar which is an *extreme* numismatic rarity. |

Even in beat-up condition, I'd say any $500 or $1000 notes are worth holding onto as they will carry some premium over face value. Some folks here in Korea have been lucky enough to locate them in banks, as some people will just cash them in unaware of the numismatic value. |

Not a coin, but a gold-plated silver 1oz. official medal from KOMSCO for the 2014 World Cup in Brasil, commemorating S. Korea's 8th consecutive qualification for the World Cup. We've made our 9th recently in Russia.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but *This* is exactly what I've been wondering about for a long time. All sources I could find do not seem to mention whether it is normal for 1874 dated Heaton cents to be in coin orientation. Mine also seems to be in coin, not medal like rest of the series. Any Straits collectors there to solve this mystery? |
