I recharge my silica (with & without paper packs) in the oven and or toaster oven. The only problem for the paper packs is that sometimes the seam will separate from the heat but since I find them for free its not a big deal. When I put them in the toaster oven I will cover them loosely with aluminum foil as to keep the direct heat off of them. I fear that since the heat coil is closer in a toaster oven it may cause problems. I can't say if it saves me any money or cost me more but what I do know is it saves me the time from having to buy new ones. |

I say to do what ever will make you happy. I personally buy the set and open it to look at them. Once my curiosity and eagerness has been satisfied I will put the set back in the cardboard box and store it with the rest of my mint sets. The boxes do have the year and set type marked above the bar code so you wont have to write it there. |

Raw coins take up less space than ones in a slab. I personally prefer to buy my coins raw and maybe this dealer has a customer base with the same preference. |

Quote: How long should I leave it in the acetone?
It shouldn't take long before the acetone takes affect on the glue. Since the coin isn't in the best shape, you may be able to wipe the glue off after a short soak. Any residue left behind will require more time in the bath. This should be a good learning experience for you and try to remember that problem coins will always be problems coins. Acetone won't work miracles. |

Quote: LCMH, the same situation exits with all collectables. Pocket knives, cars, sports memorabilia, etc. And if you think you've got it figured out, you're doing better than I am. An auction is basically a market test based on the circumstances. No two people are likely to agree, and the circumstances may never be the same.

I find it best to look at all available resources to get a general idea of what a particular coin is selling for. I then have an idea of what I might expect to pay. No matter what coin I purchase, I always feel like I pay retail and very rarely feel as if I "stole" the coin. Condition is everything when determining a price and that is what you need to try to focus on when evaluating the coin.
For example: an AU-58 Type 1 1917 standing liberty quarter can have multiple prices from different resources. What those resources won't/can't tell you is the condition it is in. A blast white example of that coin in the same grade will sell higher than one with dark or yellowish toning.
Look at the coin, evaluate and determining what you are comfortable the value is based off a "general" consensus of all available resources is the best way to go IMHO. |
