Quote: Buy in cash in person; it is safer. Bonus: you get to examine in hand yourself, before purchase.
Yep it takes the guesswork out of purchases where you may get some random year ASE or some random assortment of 90% silver.
Also, with your point about credit card scammers - buying with cash not only avoids that, but keeps your home from being a potential target. If your credit card can get hacked, so can your purchase history and your address. Hey look...this guy bought a monster box of ASEs three times and 10 ounces of gold. Call me paranoid, that's fine, but I like to keep these types of purchases a little more discreet. Not even sure posting in the "what did you add to your stash" thread is a good practice. |

Revisiting this because I saw a thread on another forum where there was some disagreement as to the value of stacking silver.
Personally, I wouldn't bother. Refiners pay a fraction of melt for it and you have to be careful that it's actually sterling and not silver plated. Further, the storage of it is not as easily facilitated as say a roll of ASEs or rolls of junk silver. |

Very true hfjacinto. Always do these deals in a public place during daylight hours. I have used a bank, library, post office lobby, restaurant, etc. I also have an email account that is very non-descript with a fake name and use a burner phone number. After the deal is done, I do not go directly home instead making multiple random stops while keeping an eye out to ensure I am not being followed home. Better safe than sorry. |

Quote: I've done Craigslist deals that have went well. EBay to me just sounds quite painful.
Same here....probably did 60-70 deals involving coins using Craigslist (buying and selling) and all went smoothly. Have done quite a few more using that, Facebook marketplace, and Armslist (for firearms/ammo) that all went well. I do take an abundance of caution with these deals due to the nature of the goods being exchanged and due to these all being cash deal.
There's no perfect way to sell, but Ebay to me seems like the least enticing option between LCS, local sale with Craigslist or Facebook marketplace, and Ebay. |

Quote: For fun, try checking eBay completed sales info for silver rounds--not asking prices but completed sales. You might be surprised. Also, the buyer could pay for shipping.
I mentioned the risk of being scammed by a buyer on Ebay...this is no secret. The other thing that needs to be mentioned is that sales totalling over $600 in a calendar year are reported to the IRS if I remember correctly. So with 30 ounces, he would easily exceed that threshold. So that's reason #3 not to sell them on Ebay. Fees, potential to get scammed, and tax implications are all reasons I stopped selling there after being a Powerseller for years. |

Quote: Coinstar today......BOOM!!!
Very similar to a hoard I found last year at the same location. $58.94 in US coins, $5.40 in Euros, $1.10 Canadian, and one UK cent.
That's insane. How does someone walk away from all of that if they were making a coin dump? Or did the Coinstar machine have a malfunction or even release the Kraken after being all jammed up? Congrats on the free money! |

In response to the post that numismatics is better than bullion, that's fine if it suits your needs. I look at it completely differently after decades of being both a collector and a stacker in multiple areas of collecting (sports cards, stamps, coins, bullion to name the main ones) as well as having been a dealer in two of those (sports cards and coins/bullion).
The reality is that any collectible is a more limited market when it comes time to sell or for your heirs to sell. You will only get a fraction of the value when selling to a dealer and your potential buyers are limited due to the nature of it being a collectible. Also, collectible markets die off...see Pokemon cards, stamps, Beanie Babies, etc. While I don't see that happening with numismatics, how many in the younger generation are actively collecting? Where will the numismatic market be in 10-20 years? Every time I go to a coin shop or a coin show, it's 80% or more people in their 40s and older FWIW.
Granted, you will get a fraction of the value for bullion when selling to a dealer, but the haircut isn't as steep typically. Either way, bullion is MUCH more liquid if you need to sell or if your heirs decide to sell your stash. Are central banks and governments trying to get their hands on as many numismatcs or other colletibles as possible? That's right...they aren't. The desire to acquire gold and silver has been around thousands of years and I don't see any reason why this would ever go away.
For the above reasons, I got out of sports card collecting/dealing about 5 years ago. Same with stamps and same with numismatics. I have been told "no thanks" when trying to sell coins or sports cards to a shop. Never had that happen with bullion, though. |
