Thanks @Hondo. That's more information than I would have ever imagined getting. I see that this and similar pieces are part of the history of your "golden" dollar.

It weighs 8.2 grams, 26 mm in diameter, and appears to be brass/ bronze

It was in the collection of a former Royal Canadian Mint employee, hence it might have been given out in some meeting in the US.

They style of the box was remniscent of the US mint style. Red white and blue ribbon on the inside, but no writing anywhere.

Not much to go on here:

26 millimeters, 5.9 grams

It seems to be a blank that is waiting to be inscribed with something, but what or what for is far from obvious.

Good for them! They do a lot of good work, but most of them are only NCLT. I'm glad that this one wasn't.

African banknotes were heavily used in commerce, and the tropical environment of many of the countries are two reasons the high grade older notes can be very scarce.

The main problem with Rhodium is that the average precious metals dealer has no means to reliably determine Rhodium content. That and the wild long-term price swings means that it will likely be a niche market for quite some time.

@pacificoin, do you have anything specific to suggest that CIII's effigy will not appear on Canadian coins or banknotes? I have heard rumblings but that's all. I have no strong feelings on the subject.

In my opinion the notes probably circulated for much longer, perhaps because poeple didn't use banks as much (so the old ones werent sent in as much) and perhaps because they wanted to save printing costs. Also, they were often used in tropical conditions.

When I was in Kenya many years ago, many of the banknotes were filthy dirty rags.

Modern Commemoratives As Bullion?

While modern commemoratives and other silver coins can sometimes be bought for spot, dealers will of course buy them back at a greater discount from spot as compared to modern bullion coins. The demand is simply not as great and they often end up being melted. So if you are planning to keep them for a long time, you end up with more silver or a greater variety of interesting silver coins, but if not, you may be a little worse off.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned this. A nickel planchet would be highly magnetic, the copper-nickel no. Just put a magnet to it, and at least that will tell you something for sure.

It's clear from that discussion that the 1 cent coin is here to stay for a while. So you Americans should just learn to love it, or go cashless.

My LCS sells most a lot of gold like sovereigns at spot or a small amount over. This of course does not apply to the modern 999 gold like Maples, because they have to pay more than bullion from their supplier. Mind you, they don't have a regular supply of the cheaper gold-it depends on what comes in from customers. Sometimes a lot, sometimes none.
