Would be interesting to know when these were collected by the original owner. I wrote an article on the current 1881-CC fakes flooding the internet and matched the common reverse to Slider23's image from back in 2018 I believe...

You guys are good!

I wrote articles on it in both EAC's PW and Coin Week; XRF testing compared to a genuine mint product, which the over struck 1796 is certainly not!

Interesting; really no comment here except to say the latest technology does not destroy the "source" example. The counterfeiters actually would list the genuine source coin through the same selling platform as the struck clones. I actually own one of the source coins; it originally had a hole in it that was skillfully repaired and then used to make the counterfeit dies.

I actually own one of the clones from a hole repaired example; it was actually slabbed genuine/ repaired due to the details around the repaired and tooled area of the genuine coin.

Of the 25+ examples of these "deceptive" struck counterfeits many are of low grade and low value denominations but they still made them. And as far as having any sort of faith the TPG is "always correct and unquestionable", well every one of the 25+ has an example slabbed by at least one of the top 4 TPGs as genuine when they are not...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion! My statement is based on many struck fakes in TPG holders as genuine that match the genuine die pairing and overlays. It is a fact that the 20+ different examples in my collection and the 25+ different denominations/ varieties document attest to!

Tried to contact him but received no response. Dealer in later date large and half cents along with other numismatic items.

One would think he should know better, as these are what I consider mid-level fakes.

Going through the effort of attribution usually smokes these out...

I have written Coin Week articles on both "families" of counterfeits.

Yes, the font differences of the counterfeit on the left compared to the genuine example on the right is one key. But, the slab is decent and the barcode scans correctly. Fortunately the on-line cert, which of course has no image does have a past auction listed and link to the Heritage one, so images to compare to.

For anyone who has read mine or other's articles on these, the "bite marks" on the throat of the "Vampire Counterfeits" are diagnostic of the fakes; the counterfeiters have made "coins" using this design from 1795 through 1799, but the 1795 is obviously the most deceptive since it was taken from a genuine host example.

This counterfeit can be seen in my unpinned post in PCGS's CU Forum on known counterfeit PCGS holders.

Yes, as @Ty2020b stated, 2 different coins:

And as @kanga notes, no PCGS on the slab corner.

I sent Mr. Grumpy a note explaining but have not received a response yet...

Overlays of obverse to know genuine example dead on; mintmark off on reverse. Dimensionals all good. XRF at a PA testing lab showed sterling silver, not correct for the period.
