Price guides are a relic of the past and generally shouldn't be used these days. Ended ebay listings, auction sales, that's where you'll better find the actual market value of a coin.
If ebay sellers are selling slabbed coins for less than what it costs to get coins slabbed, they didn't get them slabbed themselves, some less experienced individual did, and eventually sold it to a dealer. Collectors constantly send coins in for grading that aren't worth doing so. One other act worth mentioning, a dealer sending 1000 coins in for grading, losing on the MS69's and making up for it on the MS70's, or something to the sort. |

I don't mind giving a little shout-out to some of my competitors, so I've had great experiences buying from these sellers...

About 18 months ago, I pulled the numbers for Dutch (single) Ducats, dates 1586 to 1817. There were 1,972 examples slabbed AU50 and higher. 530 of those are from shipwrecks. 1,165 total slabbed MS.
The numbers for Dutch 2 Ducats (standing knight, not gold off metal struck coins like the gold 6 Stuivers) is so tiny. Fewer than 75 pre-1800 examples slabbed MS. Just a hair more than slabbed MS Gold 6 Stuivers, which were at 65 total. |
