I found this among Grandpa's beat-up war nickels. There is a distinctly different strip of metal starting at the rim after the final T in trust and spreading out slightly until it reaches Jefferson's collar. It looks like it's kind of flaking in spots. Whatever it is, it doesn't seem to affect the reverse. What is this?
Thanks in advance!

Quote: My father kept his loose silver coins in a big tobacco tin - brand "Mixture No. 79" which I still have. Now I throw coins in there that I want to keep but don't know what to do with.
That's probably what Uncle Danny was doing. I have a bunch of coins like that too, where I think something's kind of cool about them but they probably aren't worthy of my "real collection" binders. LOL. |

I was thinking one or the other as well (actually my first thought when it fell into my hand was that it was another worn beyond recognition Liberty Nickel, since he had several of those, but it's too small). But there's the barest hint of a raised design of some kind and a hint of a rim as well. I wish I knew how to get a better photo. Anyway, I figured I'd give it a try. Thanks! |

I hold onto them because my Grandpa said I should. I know his reasoning went out the window when the law against melting them passed, but I'm super sentimental.
Up to recently, though, I haven't been all that diligent about it—that's changed, plus I'm occasionally asking for penny rolls at the bank (not boxes, just whatever they can spare). At some point I may end up with so many I have to rethink. |

When only one side is toned that can indicate legit toning (IMO it can also indicate that some savvy person covered one side before putting it in the container with whatever agent they used to tone the coin). I collect toners, and on two of the three pennies shown, the colors look like naturally toned pennies I've seen, so definitely could be legit. The bright colors and the combination of colors on that green one look dodgy to me. Not saying it can't be legit but I'd only buy that one if it was graded. |

Also, just a historical possibility: I think the tin this was in came from my great grandparents—my uncle spent some summers on their farm. My 2Xgreat grandfather was Canadian, and he came to the US to fight in the Civil War, so there's a possibility this might have been either a Union token or a Canadian coin from his youth. |

Quote: I've kept all bank bags and old containers that come in the collections I buy. My favorite are the tall skinny Alka-Seltzer jars that were used as silver quarter tubes. Yours are pretty cool, the band aid tin is a good size. I have a similar tin from my dad.
Those Alka Seltzer jars might be collectible. I've looked the above up (except the cig case, since I wasn't sure what it was) and I see some identical items sold on eBay—not huge bucks, but IDC since I'm not selling, just curious.
I probably ruined the bandaid tin for collectors anyway—first time I went thru the coins I wrote on the lid what was in the tin. LOL. (Incidentally, the bandaids originally in the tin were dosed with mercurochrome— ) |

OK, I understand the concept of linear plating bubbles, I think. They'd be sort of like the zinc zits you sometimes see on pennies, only in lines? Feel free to clarify/elaborate/correct my mistaken thinking.
But rolling lines? So there are rollers that touch both sides of a coin at some point in the minting process? |

Oh, and WRT coins. I don't collect coins from Nazi Germany or other historical times where the existing governments represented by the coins were doing horrifying things. I don't really feel like they carry any spiritual influence so much as just not especially wanting to memorialize those parts of history in my own collection. They do give me an icky feeling. |

Interesting question. I don't especially worry about it but I don't totally dismiss the possibility that there are things beyond our understanding in the universe.
I have Christian friends who perform a sort of exorcism when they move to a new home or acquire some old item. I don't really go with that but it's a thing. For myself, I'll go with 1 John 4:4 that says "Greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world." IOW if there are such things, I think I have a great defense against them.
I also have friends who hold other beliefs—one friend burns sage when she's concerned about things like that. Another who is Muslim talked about something her family did when they moved house, but she wasn't specific.
I guess talk to others who share your beliefs and see what they suggest? |

It's the right size for that, Cointree. I'd bet that's it. He probably got it from one of the people who worked for Grandpa at the Sinclair station, who used them to keep his cigs from getting crushed while he worked. He def got the Sinclair and PowerX banks at the station as well.
The coins in the two really old (circa early 1900's) tins were also older than most of his coins—stuff like some G1 Barber coins and Liberty Nickels, super corroded Indian Cents and Buffalo Nickels, etc. There's one "mystery coin" that I might post here for help with identification. I'm not even positive it IS a coin—it's worn so flat I'd have thought maybe it was a nickel planchet or stamping disc, but there is the faintest straight line across one side. |

My Uncle Dan filled a lot of odd containers with coins he found. Some of the containers are pretty sweet.
If anyone can identify the green and white one let me know (there is nothing like a brand name on the plastic—just some patent/manufacturing stuff on the bottom).
Thanks!
