Resurrecting an old thread. Over the years I've found several coins that look like the OP's coin. Always figured it was die deterioration. But I also have a few like these shown below. Have not found a photo that identifies what a 6/6 should look like. I think these are MD. Do you agree?
Two weeks ago I bought a hoard of nickels (over 150 lbs). First I segregated them by monarch/type. Tonight while searching the QEII young heads, I found this one. Doing the happy dance !
Sorry, no photos. The main die markers are the doubled bow to the left which is like LC-2A3 and the curved forked palm leaf to the right of the reverse bow (looks like the letter y).
I agree, it's Lees 32. Other differences in the die markers:
Lees 32 has the "cut knob &" vs. Lees 33 has the "round knob &" Lees 32 has a nicked 1st E in COMMERCE on the left just below the top cross bar Lees 33 has a nicked L in COLONIES on the right just below the cross bar and another on the left above the bottom serif
Picked this one up at the NYINC yesterday. PC59-46 DP9#4 but not noted on the label, so, got it for cheap. Die state 4 with the collapse at the 9 and the heavy die crack at leaf 7. One can see the tail of the underlying 9 to the lower right and the distinctive repunch of the 5.
