Regardless of condition, the fact that it's a 1793 makes it very special indeed. Those are very rare and valuable, more so than even the Chain Cent. Can you tell us more about it, where did you get it, it appears raw so are you going to get it graded, have you attributed the Sheldon variety, that kind of thing.
Edit: yes as Hondo says, first things first, it needs to be real. Needs to be in a slab. Til then all bets are off. |

Quote: Melting bullion down to create more bullion, with less of a guarantee on quality and weight, would be pointless
That sure makes more sense to me, coins are as good as it gets for confidence in ownership, plus pre-33 has a 'cool factor' that gives it an edge over modern gold bars or rounds. I love my pre-33 and would never trade it straight up for modern bullion. |

Quote: "Gold will be $30k and silver $3,000 a coin,"
Is this a typo, did that mean $300 for silver? Current gold/silver ratio is ~100/1. He thinks it will go to 10/1, without any explanation?
As for $30K gold, that's just a prediction of 10X inflation, an ounce of gold will buy the same amount of stuff it always has, all the way back to ancient times. |

Thought this was cool, here's a 'type set' of 1839 cents, I found 2 of them just picking through my sack of random large cents, grabbed the other 2 cheaply on eBay, 20-30 bucks.
What a crazy year in the cent world, they started with the Head of 1838, then the Silly, the Booby, and the Head of 1840/Petite Head, all in one year. And there is a 5th type, a rare "1839/6" overdate that is a lot harder to get, I'll skip that for now, just thought it was cool to see this much variety in a single year.

Hi all - does anyone know about old vintage US Mint or Bank canvas coin bags?
A while ago I posted my sack of 'junk silver', and thought wouldn't it be cool to have it in a proper old mint or bank bag of that same era.
Problem is, quick search on ebay, the only dates I see are 1970s and later, wouldn't it be great to get one from the 20s or 30s. Needs to hold $600 face, so needs to be quite large. Would also be nice to have drawstrings, most of the ones for sale seem open at the top and get sewed (permanently) shut.
So kinda like this, but bigger & with a date - you get the idea- TIA!

My goodness, it seems it's possible to scour eBay for unloved or badly categorized silver items and snag them up for well under melt value. If I were you I wouldn't let that cat out of the bag! |

OK, I meant for a new collector, not a seasoned pro, hoped that would be implicit. I wish someone had given me this advice when I was new. Like the OP, I bought a bunch of coins thinking they were beauties, but upon learning more they mostly had some kind of problem. I stick to my advice but will phrase it more clearly - until you get good at spotting subtle problems, assume any raw coin of value has some problem when pricing it, or else spend the extra and buy slabbed. Better? |

Anyone who has sent coins off for grading knows the frustration of getting a Details grade. I guess it's just part of the education, it's best to assume any raw (non-slabbed) coin has some 'details' problem when you buy it, otherwise it would have already been slabbed. This board is a great source of wisdom on these subjects, hope to see your collection & hope you can still enjoy them. Cheers! |

As a type set collector I 'need' one of these, but for now I got a $5 coin (1800) that came in well under 5 digits. Same look & feel, same liberty & heraldic eagle, just smaller. That will hold down the 'type' until I am comfortable crossing the 5-digit barrier.
As for price, IMHO the early $10 golds are actually very good value compared w/ common looking stuff that sells for more due to high grade or rare date or something. But that's just me. |

Thought I'd check back in on this one, the lot went for $97 incl. shipping, well above my $80 estimate. When you get a lot of Mercurys they are usually mostly 1940s, maybe this was more appealing w/ the nice scattering of dates back to the earliest. Or maybe there was a semi-rare date in there, any case good to watch and learn the market. |

Welcome, the first thing is we'd need to know what you've got. Pics are always helpful, also an overall description. If it's a small number of rare valuable coins that is one thing, if it is vast boxes and sets and bags of stuff that is quite another. Hope to hear! |

According to ChatGPT, which holy mackerel is getting better frighteningly quickly,
1793 Chain Cent - Mintage: ~36,103, Surviving Population: ~1,000-1,500 1793 Wreath Cent - Mintage: ~63,353, Surviving Population: ~3,000-4,000 1793 Liberty Cap Cent - Mintage: ~11,056, Surviving Population: ~300-500
I'm lucky to have a ragged AG-details wreath, and hope someday to snag the other two.

I like buying this stuff, and the older (non-Roosevelt/Washington) coins go for a bit more than melt. Mercury dimes right now go for about $2.50 each, a bit more if they are older as some of these are, with a good number of 1910s-20s. There are also eBay fees and shipping to take another bite. I'd go $80 on this including shipping. |

I like the idea of sharing something we've learned - only one taker so far, let me add one. Did you know there were not 1, not 2, but 5 different types of 1839 large cent? I stumbled upon this tidbit and went and dug out my bag of crusty old large cents, and found that I had one of them, the 'Silly Head' type. There's also a Booby Head, a Head of 38, a Head of 40, and the only rare one, the '1839/6'. So I'm now shopping for the other 3 affordable ones just to marvel at this curiousity. Cheers!

Curious, are these Roosevelts or Mercurys or Barbers or what? I have found that the older types go for a little more, also that Barbers tend to be lighter as they got heavy use and are worn down.
Me personally, I don't like the Roosies because you need to read the date to know if it's silver, the others are guaranteed. |
