There is a third blundered I variety as I recall. I do not remember if it is in DEI or REGINA,

The problem with the obverse matrix (master die) theory lies in the fact that per the die records (still existing) Wyon only made one obverse matrix each for the 5, 10, and 20 cent coins. I have pictures of all of them (they still exist). No blundered letters on any of them.

We could hypothesize that the mint staff made other intermediate tools (subpunches and submatrices) that did not make into the die records. If they did so, they likely inherited the obverse legends from Wyon's matrices and therefore would not need reference marks. If intermediate tools ever existed, they have since been destroyed.

I'll be honest, I do not have an explanation for these marks other than blundered corrections in the working dies. Even that explanation has holes in it. Why did it happen only to the letters I?

Dunno. A conundrum.

Looking through some older purchases today. This one is PCGS AU-50 with nice original toning. Here is the PCGS link, where the pic expands https://www.pcgs.com/cert/31384348

I understand the sentiment. I am easing up on that point in time myself but am not quite there yet. In a few years though, or sooner if the USD/CAD changes substantially towards parity.

All the best.

Gene - I think these are tough to price, and I am pretty low on the learning curve for tokens. That said, as a comparison I paid about double the normal price for this 1858 cent that PCGS called broadstruck (slightly off center). Although, this one may still have had an intact collar. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Bill. It is my hope that many folks find the articles interesting. Plus, the articles are illustrated with photos of some pretty special coins.

The fourth Uncommon Cents article should be posted in the members section of the RCNA website in the next day or two. The paper CN Journals should also be out soon.

This month, finishing up the provincial cents with 1859 9/6, TPN9 #1, TPN9 #2, and one other. Next month onward to the Dominion cents of 1876.

With die wear and coin wear, the 9 widens out. 9/8 cents all have a narrow vine break at leaf #7. This coin has a wide one.

The obverse die is definitely Turner OH1 (the die cracks match). Tough to be absolutely certain about the reverse dies without having the coin in hand (i.e., heavy coin wear, Vicky crud, and no die cracks), but I am pretty sure it is an early die state of die RD4 with an old ding on the knob of the 9. As I said, I would need the coin in hand to be certain. If so, OH1/RD4 is one of the most common 9/8 die pairs.

The grading services, coin websites, and others do similar with the 1858 cents. There are multiple 1858 dies with re-punched 1s, 5s, etc. Many are relatively common. IMO, references like that mean little unless they are die specific.

I am guessing that Mike Findlay picked up on those 1859 references because graded coins with those references sold in some auction.

Past & Nearly Perfect was a really fun book to research and write. I think it fundamentally changed the understanding of the large cent specimens, but you guys be the judge. For example, prior to the book, I think almost everybody thought all 1859 and 1881-H specimen cents were the same. Who knew that there are two types of 1859 and three types of 1881-H specimens, all created for different purposes? Ditto for the PC-7 patterns of the 1858 cent and 1876-H bronze specimens; multiple types for multiple purposes.

I was both fortunate and the recipient of some great help in writing that book. The luck came in the Beckman, Cornerstone, and Cook specimens all hitting the market between 2015 and 2019, a generational transfer of these rare coins. I bought their one-cent coins with both hands, which really set up doing the book. The help came from several dealers and specimen collectors sharing their knowledge with me, and institutions like the Royal Mint, the British Museum, the Bank of Canada, Heritage, and PCGS allowing me to publish photos of the coins I did not own.

IMO, the result was the most complete study of large cent specimens ever published. I am really glad you liked it.

Hi All,

For anybody who might be interested, The 1858 Cents of Provincial Canada, Volume II (the softcover about the 1858 W9/8 Cents) is sold out and now out of print.

The softcover Canada Cent Die Studies, 1890-H and 1892 has five copies remaining to be sold and then will be out of print.

The two hardcovers, The 1858 Cents of Provincial Canada, Volume I (about the 1858 cents) and Dies & Diadems (about the whole Victorian cent series), have about 25 copies each remaining to be sold and then will be out of print.

If anyone wants to order any of these remaining books, you can PM me through CCF or send me an email. My email address can be found on the website in my signature line below. You no longer can order the books directly through the website since my webhost changed. Contact me and I will work out any book order with you.

I really appreciate those who have purchased my books and sincerely hope you have enjoyed them. After seventeen years of having books and packing materials in my garage, filling out customs forms, and running to the post office, I am winding down on personally selling books.

My last two books, Past & Nearly Perfect (about large cent specimens) and Dominion Decimals (the history of Canadian coinage struck at the Royal Mint) remain available from the RCNA website. They will also be for sale at the RCNA convention in Calgary this summer, and I will be there to sign them for who wish.

These books have been a labor of love and personal curiosity in trying to understand my favorite Canadian series and historical time period. I am taking a break on writing books and may, or may not, return to doing it someday. Rest assured, I am staying involved in the hobby and will contribute occasional articles, mostly through the CN Journal.

Thanks again and enjoy your collecting. It is a great hobby.

Tough to be certain from the photos, but OE1/RC12 methinks. A later die state than previously published, so a couple of extra die cracks.
