Quote: It's quite a shame that these products seem to be limited to the US/Canada It's a very North American way of collecting. To each their own of course, I for one loathe Dansco/Whitman type albums, I feel the cardboard (or whatever it is) cheapens the collection. |

I see that OP has gone from Great Britain to general Olympic issues to Vatican, which tells me that the question OP needs to ask himself isn't What coins should I collect?t, but rather To what coins do I feel a connection? So, I'd suggest thinking about things to which you have an affinity. A kind of food. Favorite era in history. A vacation you enjoyed more than any other. An event in which a favorite relative was involved. A book or author or movie you love. Answer these for yourself, and you'll be well on the way to finding the right collecting area for you. |

Quote: Beyond what you have mentioned I own many books but it really is about what you like to collect. That's exactly my point: for all the various collecting areas, what are people's go to printed references? If a collector was new to Byzantine coinage, what works should they look out for, or want? What about Islamic coins? New World Spanish?
There's a whole world of numismatic publishing going back centuries, that many collectors never explore or even know about. And, areas in which a budding collector may hit a brick wall without guidance.
What are those works? Why should collectors struggle through the forest of dealers/sellers like Kolbe & Fanning or Charles Davis without a map?
Surely not everyone buys a Whitman Red Book and thinks that has all the answers? |

Quote: can I trust the Amazon shop No.
Quote: I have BCW 3 ring binder pages that hold 2x2 photographic slides, advertised as not having PVC, they say "archival quality." BCW has solid stuff IMO, but archival quality isn't really a thing you can measure in objective, enforceable terms. To a great degree it's marketing language that might be used honestly, or to deceive. |

Similar to the pinned "List Of Free, Downloadable E-Books," is there list of printed must-haves? And if not, perhaps it's worth starting one? For example,
Worldwide: Standard Catalog of World Coins, Krause and Mishler. The standard for worldwide collectors.
British: Coins of England and the UK (two volumes), Spink. Find yourself humming "Rule, Britannia!"? You probably already own this, and as well you should.
etc. |

If by "wheat coins," you mean Lincoln cents from 1909-1958 ("wheat pennies"), generally the big ones to chase after are: 1909-S VDB, 1909-S, 1914-D, 1922-D, 1924-D, 1931-S, and 1955 Double die obverse. |

Quote: @classic_coin as others have mentioned any fake is against ebay tos. If that's the case, great.
Quote: Not only that, but one day these fakes will change hands and may not be labeled as a fake. Someone is likely to get dupped sometime down the road. That happens, eBay or not. Caveat emptor, always. |

Quote: Saw a counterfeit 1925 nickel for sale....clearly even states that it is a copy. I don't understand your problem with this listing. As you say, the seller "clearly... states that it is a copy." The description is accurate; there's no attempt to deceive prospective buyers, so what eBay TOS do you think are being violated? No fraud here.

Yowza, that's beautiful. Can't offer anything about it in English other than what you'd find by just googling "Tempo Goryoban," I'm afraid. My guess is that either the seller or area coin shop (what city(ies) are you visiting?) might be able to help with a book or other resource, as long as you're willing to translate. I remember a few years ago coming across the page of a young woman who was collecting and quite knowledgable about these types, If I can find it again I'll post it in this thread. |
