The mint states they won't be minting any circulation 2023 coins in the write up for the commemorative set..
"Exceptionally for 2023, this set is a rare opportunity to see the classic Canadian coin designs you know and love, stamped with this year's date ("2023") in a non-circulation version. As we focus our attention on commemorating the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022), the Mint will not be issuing any 2023-dated Canadian circulation coins featuring both the traditional reverse designs and an obverse featuring Queen Elizabeth II. Instead, we struck a limited collector's edition for each of the six Canadian coin denominations ($2, $1, 50¢, 25¢, 10¢, 5¢), and you get one of each in this special set."

You are correct, it's not the circulation set, the mint said they won't be making any circulation coins for 2023,. This set looks like the circulation sets, has all the same coins and dated 2023 but is being marketed as a non circulating set in memory of the queen. It's the only 2023 coins you'll find that have the circulated obverse and reverse.. I think I have it right.. |

Will New Coin Collector Numbers Plummet As We Move Away From Cash Transactions?

Hi,
I am an amateur coin collector. I collected Pennies when I was a kid and enjoy going through my dad's coin collection as well. For me it's nostalgic and I enjoy antiques and historical things and think it's important to preserve our history. My question is for your thoughts. As the younger generations rely on mostly electronic transactions to make even small purchases, will coin collecting and values of previously valuable coins plummet if interest wains? I fear we won't use cash at all in a few short years and therefore the nostalgic piece will not exist. Will future generations collect items they aren't familiar with? Does the hobby and coin values die and join stamp collections which are now virtually worthless..thoughts? |

Oversized 1953 5 Cent Coin

Hi Everyone,
My friend recently brought in some old coin books for me to look at from his grandpa. He said that some of the coins keep falling out. There was a loose 1953 5 cent coin that did not fit in the holder, it was too big. I compared it with another 1953 nickel and found that this one was quite a bit bigger than all the other nickels. I'm not sure if this is a wrong planchet or counterfeit coin but I've never seen an oversized nickel before. It doesn't seem to be squished, it weighs more than a regular nickel of the same year, has a larger diameter but the thickness is the same. Here are the stats:
Weight: 4.51 grams (regular 1953 nickel compared is 4.29 grams) Diameter: 22.82 mm (regular 1953 nickel compared is 20.92 mm) thickness: 1.80 mm (regular 1953 nickel compared is 1.83 mm)
It has the blue/gray chromium coating on it....
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Bill

Hi Everyone,
Here are some pics of the entire coin. I have a bunch of these, but they all have the thicker broader date except this one. Although, all of them are circulated. If anyone can compare this to an MS example, I'd appreciate it. It would be nice to see if the dates are actually squished down due to circulation. Thanks! Bill

Hi Everyone, I was searching through my 1970 pennies and after looking at a bunch, one stood out in particular. The date was markedly more delicate and not as thick as all the other coins, kind of like the 1982 small and large date coins. I took some close up pics, and if you compare the two you can see the difference although it is much more obvious in real life under a loop but if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them..
