So you're saying it's only worth 10 cents?! Bummer. But thanks for the quick reply.

I came across this 1973 dime, and as soon as I held it I knew it was different. It is slightly smaller than other 1973 dimes, but has a much wider rim, feels heavier (although I have no scale to measure that), and denticles that are barely noticeable. Any idea what this is?

Difference Between Proof-Like And Business Strike? Help A Novice!

In my coin roll hunting I will occasionally come across a proof-like coin, and at times a whole roll of them in a collectors dump. They are obvious when I see one, with their mirror finish and a rim/edge that feels sharp instead of smooth.

I've tried to find info on how these coins are made, and what distinguishes them from a business strike coin. I've read that the only difference is that they are the first coins struck with a highly polished die. But the RCM first strike coins that I buy don't look anything like a proof-like coin, so I'm confused.

I guess my question is, what distinguishes a proof-like coin from a business strike? Do they use a different dies? Do they strike it differently? Thanks in advance for the help.

I just noticed on the other side the same clips can be seen. If a rim is clipped would it typically show on both sides of the coin?

Found this coin in a roll of nickels that was obviously a collection dump. I've never seen a clipped coin in person, so can anyone tell if that's what this is? There seems to be a small clipped rim by the A of Canada, and potentially also by the T in cents. Any feedback would be most appreciated.

commems, thanks for that list!

Given that this is the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the beaver as a symbol of Canada, and the fact that the nickel is the only denomination of coin to not have a commemorative version for a very long time (the dime had a makeover in 2021 on the anniversary of the Bluenose), I wonder if we might see a unique nickel this year.

Now that we're in a new year does anyone have a hunch on what the RCM will choose to commemorate on circulation coins in 2025? Are there any significant anniversaries this year?

Found A 2020 Kansas W Quarter In Canada

Hi there. I hunt through coin rolls in Canada. It's common to find American quarters in our rolls, and I throw them in a jar to spend when I visit the States. I know very little about American coins but had heard that they produced a limited number of W mintmark quarters for circulation a few years ago. I rarely ever look at the American quarters, but I happened to flip over this Kansas quarter to find a W. How rare are they to find in circulation? Does it have much value?

Am I correct to believe that these numbers reflect the number of coins minted in that calendar and not the number of coins that bear that year on them? If so, are there any official mintage numbers for each denomination and year? For example, will there be any way to know exactly how many 2023-dated nickels there are?

A few months back I asked my bank if they had any 50 cent pieces. Among other things they gave two full rolls of uncirculated 1998 W half-dollars. I was surprised because I thought these coins only came in sets, and I wondered why someone would have 50 of them, and why they would turn them in to the bank. They gave me a bunch of other 50 cent pieces, including a 2002 coat of arms version, which also only came in sets. It made me think a collector or seller must have dumped their stock.

I came across a dozen of these nearly uncirculated 1996 toonies in a bank roll. They looked a little different than other 1996 toonies I've seen, with a darker core and a frostier finish. Could these be German planchets?

First time I've come across an off-centre strike like this while roll-hunting. How common are these? Is there much of a premium?

Thanks for this release info! I always look forward to this monthly post.

Does anyone think that, given April 1 is the 100th anniversary of the RCAF, we might see a commemorative circulation coin released next week just like they did for the 100th anniversary of the Navy in 2010? Also, does the Mint normally announce the release of the yearly first strike uncirculated roll sets in advance of their release, or only on the day of their release like other circulation coins?

GW has them available to purchase in-store today, which strikes me as odd since they aren't available in the Winnipeg Mint Boutique until next Wednesday. Also seems strange that the online order of First Strike rolls I made at GW on Dec 27 shipped today, but the order I made from the mint on Nov 14 hasn't shipped yet. Is it normal that a dealer would have it and mail it before the Mint itself?

This toonie is in nearly uncirculated condition except for this one spot? Is this a grease struck-through?

I know nothing about banknotes, so am hoping someone can help me out. I have 13 $20 bills (2004 variety) that are in sequence and are all in nearly uncirculated condition. Would there be any value above face value for these?

I think I found the answer to my own question. It sounds like they are striking the first circulation coin on Nov 14.

Do you think it's likely coin sets with the new effigy will be available for purchase on Nov 14? I think I'll be standing by the doors before the Mint Boutique opens to see if I could be the first to get my hands on one!
