If this isn't scrapping the bottom of the barrel for a theme for designs I hate to think what would be. The "Big Things" that acknowledged some landmarks weren't bad but the alphabet coins were cringeworthy and the AFL series were awful. I hope these things don't keep getting churned out just to bleed $ out of collectors. Hopefully this next lot are NCLT.
I see Australia Post have reduced the price of their remaining stock of AFL coins. Obviously not very popular. I wonder how this next lot will go?
I would prefer to see things like native animals or significant landmarks or prominent people featured on our coins. The Kookaburra and Kangaroo coins are great examples. Subjects like cartoon characters (e.g. Bluey) and the like just seem to reduce the significance of being immortalised on a coin. Oh well, I guess we will see? |

I still haven't seen or heard of a purple poppy in circulation yet. Other than the half a dozen Firefighter coins I found a few weeks ago, I haven't seen many of those either. So, I have lashed-out and bought a roll of each of them for $100 each.
Come to think of it, I really don't see many of the colored $2 coins in circulation except for the "lollypop" ones issued through Woolworths etc (but not the Vegemite ones - they are as scarce as hen's teeth here).
I guess the coins issued through outlets other than retailers like Woolies, get snapped up by collectors and there are very few that actually make it to the banks and get distributed in circulation? |

I can't tell if these three 50c coins are "greaser" or just PMD.
The 1978 obverse has the rim and bust intact but the lettering is barely visible. It has seen a lot of circulation but the difference between the lettering and the rest of the detail suggests to me that this one is a "greaser".
The 1980 I have posted before in another thread. Both sides have missing detail in the same area. However the "AUST" is still just visible and some of the rim is still there. Not sure about this one.
The 2006 coin has had something happen to part of the shield. Some of the detail is still faintly visible and I don't see anything that suggests an impact was responsible for what we see. The rest of the coin is in reasonable condition so I am inclined to think that the wear and tear of circulation was not responsible for the missing details. I think this one might be a "greaser" too. Anyway, I like them so they are in with the "odds and sods" too.

Can anyone tell me where coins are rolled for Armaguard? How many coin rolling centres are there? I am curious about the likelihood of getting the same coins back after noodling them.
A teller once told me that I was wasting my time getting bags of coins each week as they were the same coins going around in a circle. I'm pleased to say that it has not been a waste of time. I get plenty of "keepers" each week. I wonder how big the catchment areas are for each coin rolling centre. Does anyone know? |

It's been pouring rain so I decided to noodle through a bag of $2 coins. Must have been my lucky day. Found these beauties! The 2013 coronation coin is in almost perfect condition. Up until now I have only found about four of the Firefighter coins but this time I scored six in perfect condition! The 2017 coins are also in very good condition. The others are all pretty good too. I can hardly believe my luck. Hope others are having a win too. Happy hunting.

Thank you QldSandy for that info and pictures. I have read somewhere that fake $2 coins were made for 1992, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2003. I don't have any pictures for reference unfortunately.
This 2010 $1 mob of roos coin is unusual in that both sides of the coin have something going on. The obverse has a clear planchet flaw running from "B" in Elizabeth to "A" at the end of Australia. The reverse has three coin chips. One on the top roo (rabbit ear) and two on the big roo (back of head and a very small one on the chest). There is also a couple of 'lines' that look like doubling to me (I am definitely no expert). One is on the back of the hind leg of the top roo and the other on the front of the hind leg on the second roo.

Anyone else have some oddities they would like to show please? Surely I am not the only one who collects these things? |
