Yep, along with my order for a Beavis coin, kids fluffy toy, a pair of socks, pencil and a tea strainer (wish they had pink ones). Oh well, it used to be fun. Just wondering how it will go from now on. What will be the next junk item they try and market as a collectable numismatic piece? Anniversary of cornflakes, Pal dog food, Bunnings sausage sizzle, peanut butter...seems like anything goes these days and once it's available to the ebay sellers prior to release, people go nuts and pay stupid prices. I will watch with interest but won't be buying.

Not due for release until 8.30am 28 Sep but as usual already selling on ebay the day before. Price advertised by RAM is $15 but buyers already paying over $70.

RAM do not seem to worry about these early sales (or the FACT that ebay sellers can somehow get early and apparently easy and regular access to these coins - same sellers each release). I can't help wonder if this is a deliberate marketing ploy by the RAM. If we end up being a cashless society then what is there for the RAM to do except for minting junk coins for collectors?

It looks like the market for these 'commemorative' coins has been artificially inflated by this 'unofficial' early release of limited edition collector coins. I wonder how it will go if we end up cashless?

I have asked questions of RAM but cannot get any answers. Also asked questions of Australia Post regarding the claim of 1 in 10 chance of finding a colored big thing coin despite numerous colored coins being sold on ebay PRIOR to release - again no answer.

I think these organisations do not care because they are happy with the situation where their junk coins are being turned into highly sought after collectable coins. Ebay sellers win, RAM wins, Australia Post win, Woolworths win, collectors get the raw deal.

Hi Squaremealroundplate, I share your frustration with the seemingly endless release of junk coins that are just designed to bleed money out of collectors. If recent media reports can be believed (and I am sceptical) we are heading towards becoming a cashless society. If that is the case it might be worth continuing to collect circulating coins for the sake of the value of a complete collection?

If we do go cashless then circulating coins would become a thing of the past and should go up in value as collectors items. No doubt the RAM would continue to mint junk coins hoping to sell to collectors. Or we could take up collecting socks, pencils, kids soft toys and even tea diffusers that the RAM offer in their catalogue. (I would love to know how many tea diffusers they sell and why anyone would bother buying one from RAM). Anyway I hope you can still find pleasure and satisfaction in collecting. Good luck and happy noodling.

I finally cracked a year 2000 $1 mule coin. I'm so stoked. I feel like I have joined a very exclusive club - sort of the "mile high" club for noodlers!

I usually get one or two bags of $1 coins each week from the bank to noodle. Over the years then it means I have probably noodled through around 250,000 $1 coins to find this one.

I suppose the good news for those who still hope to find one for their own collection is that there are mules out there. Happy hunting.

Hi Coaster, yes, Australia Post are claiming there is a 1 in 10 chance of finding a colored coin (but that cannot really be correct given the number of colored coins sold on ebay PRIOR to official release date). The RAM-authorised dealer is not making the same claim. At least they seem to be honest and maintaining their reputation. The RAM and Australia Post (and Woolies for that matter) don't seem to care.
I wonder what will happen at the next release of wallpaper coins?

Has anyone here bought a set from Australia Post and scored a colored coin in the tube? Plenty of colored coins were being sold on ebay in the week before the official release - wonder how many were pilfered?
Interesting to see a RAM-authorised dealer selling them too. I noticed they were not claiming there would be a 1 in 10 chance finding a colored coin.
I would love to know how the ebay sellers are getting their hands on the coins to sell prior to release and how they identify the tube with the colored coins in it. It seems to be the same sellers each release so they must have a system. Anyone know or have any ideas?

As David said, it looks like a bit of a wank. Their Web site looks like a typical scammer site - spelling errors, meaningless claims and dodgy procedures etc.

I bought a coin on ebay that came with a Bidsafe certificate- not because of the certificate but because I liked the coin. I am satisfied that the coin was accurately described in the ad. No dramas there.

The certificate is a waste of paper. A kid with a pc and printer could knock up a replica in a few minutes and it would be just as valid. It has a thumb print and hand written number on it. Big deal; could be anyone's thumbprint- there is no signature or name so may as well just put "X" on it!

As the original post shows they have little in the way of credibility and that particular 'certificate of authentication' really has shot whatever credibility they may have had to tiny pieces. If anything, a coin being sold with a Bidsafe certificate might be something better to avoid?

As usual, sets already sold on ebay before official release. Will this ever stop?

Found this 2010 $1 Guides coin in today's noodle. Has a very tiny "1" stamped immediately over the 1 in the 2010 on the obverse. Unfortunately I can't get a better pic but it is easily seen by eye and quite clear under a magnifying glass. I am pretty sure it is PMD - wonder why people bother doing this?

Nice to see them get recognised for producing nice coins. Just a shame that they can't release them without alienating the collectors. I live in hope...sigh.

Sellers on ebay are offering 10 sets of unopened tubes of AFL coins for well below RRP. Apparently those sets don't include the colored coins. It seems as though the sellers are removing the tube with the colored coins and replacing them with tubes of standard coins. The adverts don't claim that there is a 1 in 10 chance of finding the colored coins so in that respect they aren't doing anything dodgy. Just wondering how they could be identifying and removing the tubes with the colored coins so reliably? There are several sellers offering 10 sets of unopened tubes below RRP so what does that mean for the genuine collectors? Is this another example of the RAM's inability to control releases of collectable coins? Who are these people that can 'scoop' releases with such regularity and immunity? Where does it end?

Seller on ebay about to strike it rich this morning. Has listed a 4.5kg tin of Australian coins for sale. Two bidders are trying to win it with the current bid at $16,100.00. If the tin was full of $2 coins it would be only about $680 worth. Buyer beware and all that.... If the 'winner' is lucky there is 1930 penny in that tin but gee what a gamble?

Yep, you guessed it. The Mint said "nothing to do with us, take it up with Woolworths" and Woolworths said "not our problem, take it up with the Mint". Get stuffed Sally.

Oh well, up until now I had a complete set of uncirculated commemorative $2 coins. That's the end of that project as I won't be buying from the scalpers again either. When the local bank stops handling cash it will be the end of collecting for me. It used to be an enjoyable hobby....sigh.

Even though the first of the seven coins is not due for release until tomorrow there are already at least 35 listings for these coins on ebay! According to the stats on ebay 32 three coin sets have been sold already as well as 91 x seven coin sets and several other sales completed already. There is even an unopened bag of 25 coins for $225! Theoretically those coins are stolen as they are only supposed to be available through the tills as change at Woolies. I wonder if Woolies or ebay will do anything about it? Will watch with interest.

$69 each!!! That's nuts. Bought one from a dealer this morning for only $15 (RRP). Didn't bother with trying RAM. I see no sales via their eshop (website still unable to cope) and their phone system crashed! Lots of unhappy people posting on RAM Facebook page.

Noodled through a bag of $2 coins this week hoping to find a Vegemite coin - no luck. Maybe to early for them to show up in rolled coins? Anyway, out of 1000 coins, these are what I was lucky enough to score. Some are a bit grubby so will try cleaning them.

Those rolls of Vegemite coins just go to show how badly the RAM have lost control.
There is supposedly a CONTRACT between RAM and Woolies that stipulates the coins are only released through Woolies tills to customers as change for purchases from that store (according to what Woolies have told me).
I don't live close to a Woolies store so I rang the closest one to see if I could get coins as part of a mail order or online order. I was told "no, have to be a personal shopper". That was confirmed later by another Woolies staff member when I pointed out (complained) that coins were available on ebay in still sealed bags and in some cases prior to release date. Woolies told me to take it up with RAM, which I did - no response!
Anyway, for someone to be able to sell 125 red Vegemite coins in rolls I really doubt they obtained those coins as change through the tills.
The RAM facebook page has many comments from frustrated Woolies customers. RAM have delayed June's coin release, they just can't get coin releases right these days. Scalpers are cleaning up due to RAM's continued failures to control collectable coin releases. Ballots maybe?

Up until the Vegemite coins I had managed to collect uncirculated versions of all the colored or commemorative circulating $2 coins. I was really keen on keeping my collection as uncirculated, that is why I opted to buy rather than noodle. I did noodle through 1000 $2 coins this week but no Vegemites - too soon maybe?

Well, I am sorry to confess that I have crossed to the dark side - I have conceded defeat and purchased from a scalper on ebay. None of my family or friends were able to get a single coin on any of their visits to their local Woolies. My approaches to Woolies and the ACCC got responses but basically said tell someone else. RAM didn't even bother to respond.
I note with dismay that RAM have delayed June's release of coins because they still can't get their stupid system to work (ballot maybe?).
It has been a while since I have bought anything from RAM; it's much easier via dealers or scalpers on ebay....sigh. No waiting in queues or getting stuffed around. Sad but what else can I do?

Thank you for the detailed explanation and link to those examples. Cool coins; I would be happy to have them in my collection. More things to keep an eye out for.
