Thanks @Smat45! I was very surprised to see it, I was reading about seated halves and just grabbed the only one I had to see what variety it was! Very lucky.
It looks like the most recent comprable auction was $528 on an NGC AU53 this year. I think with this being the highest graded example between PCGS and NGC it may carry a little extra premium. A normal 1858 50C AU55 runs for about $400-$500 though, so not a huge difference regardless.
I want to cross it over to PCGS though as I prefer them. Hopefully they'll agree with the grade, otherwise I'll keep it NGC and have them reholder it with the variety attribute. |

@jacrispies Wow, thank you so much! Spot on attribution, and thank you for breaking it down so I know what to look for.
I never would have known you can use the edges of the banner instead of the T-I alignment. I thought it was the placement of the letters in the banner, not the banner itself, that would be aligned differently. I will keep that in mind going forward.
This also explains the top of the "0" in "50 C." missing. I wasn't sure if it was just unique post-mint wear on this specific coin or an attribute of a die variety, now I know it is the latter.
These seem much more difficult to attribute than Morgan VAMs, but as you said it's probably just a matter of practice. I've stared at a lot more Morgan dollars!

Here are some more pictures, wish they could be better. As Tanman2001 said there are definitely north-south polishing lines that look much more traditional as well. The top picture captures those a bit better than the trueviews.
Coop, I hear you that they look like scratches, especially due to the chaotic nature of them. I am certain though that they are raised, and the straight PCGS grade further confirms it for me.
The larger line in the field just to the bottom right of the mint mark is very interesting. It seems to be a continuation of "scratch" marks coming from the device. I wonder why there is a gap between it and the device though. |
