An Ethical Issue When Hunting For Silver Coins

On one end of the spectrum, like DOCC mentioned, one could consider cherrypicking to be unethical. I recently cherrypicked an 1871 Shallow N Indian Cent from a well-established national dealer. I certainly didn't feel bad about it - just the opposite!

On the other end of the spectrum, if someone meant to pay me $100 and gave me two $100 bills stuck together by mistake, it would certainly be unethical not to return the extra $100 if feasible.

Circumstances and details would determine the right course of action. When I found four rolls of silver dimes - including many better date Mercurys - I asked the teller if she knew who brought them in. She said she did not know the name but would recognize the face, so I firmly suggested that if the same depositor brought in more "old coins" that the teller suggest she takes them to the LCS, the location of which I described. That was enough for me.

Had the depositor been in front of me in line, I would have said something only if the circumstances met my cost-benefit analysis. A young male depositor with neck tattoos acting aggressively would not qualify for my advice. A pleasant elderly widow would exceed my requirements. Maybe discriminating in that manner makes me unethical, but so be it.

Hi everyone. My last twelve boxes were a little below average, but still productive:

Box 1 (mix CWR/Brinks): nothing
Box 2 (Brinks): nothing
Box 3 (Brinks): 1 2019-W War in the Pacific, 1 2020-W Weir Farm, 1 2020-W Salt River Bay
Box 4 (Brinks): 1 2019-W River of No Return, 1 2019-W Lowell
Box 5 (Brinks): nothing
Box 6 (Brinks): nothing
Box 7 (CWR): nothing
Box 8 (Laundromat): nothing
Box 9 (Titan): nothing
Box 10 (Brinks): 1 1964-P silver
Box 11 (Brinks): 1 2019-W San Antonio Missions, 2 2019-W River of No Return
Box 12 (Brinks): nothing

One silver in 12 boxes isn't great, but eight W mintmarks is about average.

Hello, everyone. My surgery went well and I recovered enough to search some quarter boxes when I was stuck at home. My last twelve boxes contained:

Box 1 (Brinks): 1 2020-W Salt River Bay
Box 2 (Brinks): nothing
Box 3 (Brinks): 1 2019-W War in the Pacific, 1 1957-P silver
Box 4 (CWR): 1 2019-W San Antonio Missions, 1 2019-W Lowell, 2 2020-W Tallgrass Prairie
Box 5 (Titan): nothing
Box 6 (CWR): 1 2020-W American Samoa
Box 7 (Titan): nothing
Box 8 (Brinks): 1 2020-W American Samoa
Box 9 (Titan): 1 2019-W River of No Return, 1 2020-W Weir Farm
Box 10 (CWR): 1 1964-P silver
Box 11 (Titan): 1 1964-P silver
Box 12 (CWR): 1 2020-W Weir Farm

This was a pretty good batch, 11 Ws and 3 silver (pictured below). I hadn't found a Tallgrass Prairie W quarter in about 5 months.

Wow, that's the find of a lifetime! Congratulations, arby96.

Obviously this coin just came out of someone's collection. How it did is anyone's guess. But it looks fantastic and is very well struck.

Nice find, pound_foolish. I still haven't found a 1943 quarter, it's probably the highest mintage date I'm still missing.

Thanks, Errers and Varieties. One day at a time!

Nice finds, everyone. My last 14 quarter boxes have yielded slightly below average results, but much better than nothing:

Box 1 (Titan): nothing
Box 2 (Brinks): nothing
Box 3 (CWR): nothing
Box 4 (Laundromat): nothing
Box 5 (Brinks): 1 2019-W Lowell, 1 2020-W Weir Farm
Box 6 (Brinks): nothing
Box 7 (Titan): nothing
Box 8 (Brinks): nothing
Box 9 (CWR): 1 1964-D silver
Box 10 (Titan): nothing
Box 11 (Brinks): nothing
Box 12 (Laundromat): nothing
Box 13 (Brinks): 1 2020-W Marsh-Billings
Box 14 (Titan): 1 2019-W River of No Return

My roll searching will be on a hiatus for a bit. I'm having surgery on Monday, and the recovery will take about a month. I've accumulated plenty of rolls to keep me occupied once I feel up to it, but no lifting >10 lbs will keep my bank runs limited.

My last four CWR dime boxes, gathered from different banks from different parts of town, contained zero silver dimes. Definitely disappointing, until my most recent box: three rolls contained a total of 33 silver Roosevelts!

In a different batch of CWR, I also found an excellent VG/F 1936 Canadian dime.

That's how it goes in coin roll searching: some days are productive, some aren't.

Box 3 (Bag): 1 2019-W San Antonio Missions, 1 2020-W Salt River Bay, 1 1963-D silver
Box 4 (Brinks/CWR mix): 1 2019-W War in the Pacific
Box 5 (Titan): 1 1957-D silver
Box 6 (Brinks): 1 2020-W Marsh Billings, 1 2020-W Weir Farm, 1 2019-W River of No Return

Box 9 (Brinks): nothing

Nice, johnsoalris. I've only found two so far, both P. I'm in Kentucky, so I usually get about 75% Philadelphia coins.

Yeah, John77, I was pretty disappointed, but I'm sure I'll find more. I did see a post on another site from a man in Puerto Rico who had found dozens of 2024 nickels in change, and also some solid rolls from a bank. Seems like a repeat of 2009.

I received a BU 2024-P nickel and quarter at the grocery store today in change. I asked the cashier if I could buy a roll of nickels, and he sold me one with shiny, BU nickels at each end. What luck!

I got home and opened it, and all were indeed new, brilliant, uncirculated *2023-P* nickels. But hey, at least I got one 2024!

Nice finds, everyone.

I recently searched my 800th box of dimes. Box number 799 was spectacular, containing two rolls of solid silver dimes, my first big find since this summer. It was welcome after a period of many boxes in which I found relatively little silver - and, like pound_foolish, many short rolls.

One roll was all silver Roosevelts, the other all Mercury dimes - mostly from the 1940s, with two 1939s, one 1936, and one well-worn 1918. All the Mercury dimes were Philadelphia coins.

While the next box - number 800 - was not as spectacular, it was well above average, containing three Mercuries (1925, 1944, 1945, all P) and two silver Roosevelts, including a BU 1964.

My average is holding steady at about 1.2 silvers per box without the big finds, and 1.8-1.9 silver per box when the occasional hoard of silver coins is included in the total.

Box 3 (Brinks): nothing
Box 4 (Brinks): 2 2020-W Salt River Bay
Box 5 (CWR): 2 2019-W River of No Return
Box 6 (Brinks): 1 2020-W Salt River Bay
Box 7 (Titan): nothing

I keep stats on all my searches in a Microsoft Excel file. I update my results to the quarter and dime collecting threads every 100 boxes or so. However, I only track silver finds (by date/mint) and W quarters: not proofs, non-silver foreigns, 2009s, or NIFCs.

I also keep track of the sources of each roll (customer wrapped, machine wrapped by distributor, or bagged coin) so as to compare the finds by source.

Nice finds, John77. Silver Canadians are always fun, and are more common here in Cincinnati than one might think.

My last twelve boxes have been way below average. I had a good mix of sources, too, from different banks. But we all know how it goes: you win some, you lose some.

And I at least did snag an American Memorial Park W quarter, which is one of my tougher ones to find.

Box 1 (Brinks): nothing
Box 2 (Brinks): nothing
Box 3 (Brinks): nothing
Box 4 (Brinks): nothing
Box 5 (Titan): nothing
Box 6 (CWR): nothing
Box 7(CWR): nothing
Box 8 (Brinks): 1 2019-W American Memorial Park
Box 9 (Titan): nothing
Box 10 (Laundromat): nothing
Box 11 (CWR): nothing
Box 12 (Laundromat): nothing

Hopefully the next dozen will be more productive. I just picked up a new box today.

Do Coin-Counting Machines At Banks Reject Silver Coins?

I agree, jbuck. The reason I do not search half dollars at a large scale is that there is no place to effectively dispose of them in my region. Thus I'm restricted to the occasional roll or what I can spot in a teller's tray.

That's OK with me, though, since there is plenty of silver to be found in dimes, quarters, and nickels.

The Magner 900 series machines at several banks near me do not reject silver coins. I have found silver in bags from the machines.

But, they also do not accept half dollars or dollar coins.

Nice, John77. Across 781 boxes of dimes, I've only found two 1955-S and two 1955-P dimes. The only dime I still need to complete my collection is the 1955-D.
