Looking around I do see a high of 3.20 grams so your weight is high at 3.69 grams, but it does look quite real as well of course. Could just be a one off heavy flan was struck.

This is what I found too and why I had questions about the coin. From looking at online listings the average weight for the coin is about 2.7 grams. Therefore, this coin is almost 1/3 heavier than what you would expect. After some more research I found this article posted on academia.edu by Shawn Caza:

Weight, Fineness and Diameter Standards for Late Roman Bronze Coins - A Tutorial
https://www.academia.edu/41222962/W...s_A_Tutorial

He lists the range for AE3 size coins as 1.5 - 4 grams. So Roman quality control was not all that precise and my coin is within this range.

Thank you louisvillekyshop for your input.

Thanks Livingwater, I appreciate your opinion and advice. This coin was only $18 so there was not much risk. I mostly look at NGC slabbed coins on eBay because of the potential for fakes. The bulk of my ancients were won/purchased from CNG auctions.

Thanks again.

Hello All,
I recently purchased this coin off eBay for not very much but I am questioning the authenticity. The item description was:

Quote:
Roman Constantine I AE3 Romulus Remus Siscia Mint
Approx 18mm across, struck after the death of Constantine 330-346, shows the helmeted personfication of the city of Rome on the front and Romulus and Remus sulkling a she wolf on the reverse

I just started getting interested in them and I would like to hear opinions on this coin from people more knowledgeable than me. The size is 18-19mm but the weight, 3.69g, is much heavier than anything I am seeing for similar coins.

It does not look cast to me. The details look good, the surface is not too rough and I see no seams on the edge. However, the weight bothers me.

Thanks for your opinions.

Not sure about grade but I have a question for the more seasoned experts. Could this coin be a matte proof? I see the wire rim on the lower obv that is supposed to be a sign of a proof of that era. The strike also looks pretty detailed for this time frame.

@Coop,
I do not doubt your assessment of circulation flattening. However, what is the explanation for the 4's looking different? The flattening/broadening looks even for everything else.

Hello All,
I have a beat up 1944 cent that looks like it could either be a DDO-003, DDO-007, DDO-017 or maybe I am just seeing circulation flattening. I am leaning toward a DDO because of the different appearance of the 4's in the date. Note that the "triangles" of each "4" are of different size. For the 17! different DDO listed on VarietyVista, the three likely candidates:

http://varietyvista.com/01a%20LC%20...4PDDO007.htm

Like to hear other opinions...

Thanks,

Hello group,
I assume many of you also got an email from the US Mint today with the 40% offer on the 2021 annual sets. I was thinking of picking up a Silver Proof set and was curious about the mintage numbers. The US Mint's ordering page says there is an unlimited mintage. While I understand during the production year there would be no limit, but since it is 2022, I figured the production was complete and there would be mintage number recorded.

So I used the "Chat" feature on the order page and asked them what the mintage was and I was told it was unlimited. So I then asked if they are still being minted in 2022 and was told "yes". This seems unlikely but can this be true or did I get a clueless reply?

Are these a decent pick up at 40% off?

@ CoinHI, I do not have the coin with me at work, but I do not remember seeing any real evidence up that far on the rev. I will take a closer look and post a photo if I see anything interesting.

@ makecents,
Apparently maddieclashes.com is not accepting submissions (at least for one year, not sure when that was posted)

This coin was not as bad with verdigris as some of the others, but it was "damaged" already. I tested, with before an after photos this batch cleaning and the surface patina was not really effected. They were probably valueless before and probably valueless now, but at least they are stable.

@Earle42,
This coin suffered from verdigris (along with hundreds of wheat cents I had stored in rolls for years). It was soaked/sonicated with sesquicarbonate to neutralized it. I would have just used Verdi-care, but I found the clash after cleaning a whole lot of cents. The number was way too high for individual treatment. This cleaning gives the coins the appearance seen here. It is much more attractive in person than in the photos.

This is my first found die clash. Not the most dramatic example but the evidence it petty indisputable. Interesting is that it is not listed on Mad Die Clashes.

Thanks smat for your suggestion. I will look into this option. "Vams'" comments are also valid and I am on the fence about whether it is worth getting the better coin graded. This is why I posted the question. An EF40 is worth about $200 (and it might grade a little higher). However, as you say there are at least two listed on eBay now w/o attribution and there are more than a dozen with attribution. So its not clear if you could get $200 even in a slab.

Sorry if the full photos do not show up well. The close ups are of the same coins.

Poor lighting aside, does it pay to have one or both coins sent in for grading?

I believe I have two 1934-D VAM-3 (DDO) coins I recently bought off eBay where neither seller did not attribute them. I think I got a decent deal even if they do not have that much added value. One is in better condition than the other and I am guessing both have been cleaned. Do you think they are worth sending to be graded/authenticated? Either way they were a fun find. Thanks,

Acetone is not working. Soapy water in a sonicator might have lighten the brown spot a little.

I am thinking mylar on the holder has some really small holes and acid from the PVC caused the spots. So it is probably not going to go away. That's why I experimented with a solicitor. Figured I cannot make things any worse...

Thanks T-Bop for your opinion. I have done a quick acetone dip. (maybe 30 secs). I am tempted to do a longer soak since it cannot make things any worse. What bothers me is that I had the PVC flip stapled in the album with the rest of the set. None of the coins adjacent to the flip (and actually touching it) had issues. Just this coin in the cardboard holder. I have not heard of the folders causing issues, just PVC which was not in direct contact with the 50D. Oh well.

I was pretty active with my collection up until I went to grad school in 1984. I just recently looked at my collection for the first time since then and was a little concerned about the condition of this coin. It was really the only coin I ever purchased from a dealer (BU grade for $8.50) back in the 80's. It has been in a cardboard/window holder that was in a PVC flip, so maybe some of the damage is PVC related.
So my questions are: What could be causing the black specks on both sides? Does the brown spot under the nose effect grading? I know the general rule that you should not clean coins, but these marks were not present 40 years ago and the coin was never removed from the holder until recently.

I am also not sure what is causing the diagonal streaks on the rev. They are on the coin and they are not scratches. Again this was not present before storage.

Aside from the staining/crude, I am having a hard time judging the possible grade this coin could be using the PCGS photo guide. Some elements seem like they could rate >MS65 while other seem quite a bit lower. I am guessing this it probably due to it not being a very good strike, but I really do not have the experience to make that judgement.

Thanks for your opinions.
