I absolutely did not think that. I guessed 63 PL, which sell for roughly the price he is asking. He offered $337 which was tempting.

Very tempted to hit the buy button on this. What do think the grade is? Seller saying DMPL and Cameo like. My guess is MS63 PL. Thanks!

Thanks, KPP! I feel like I'm getting help asking out a girl haha. I have purchased several coins from this seller, but I am hesitant to take the risk on this one. I'll keep the group informed if I have her through this in with the others I purchased.

Cointree - Good catch, I will check this out. I have six more coins to leave feedback for.

hfjacinto - I appreciate your honest feedback. I had no idea that photos were juiced and dealers were so shady on eBay, I sure do now. I have two dealers within 15 minutes of me, I go in on a bi-daily basis to check things out.

I don't mind a home run, but what is beginning to bug me is how sellers title their listings and misrepresent their items. I honestly knew nothing more about this coin other than it's not a common coin and pretty much only try and buy BU or higher coins. Very rare that I buy anything under MS63 now a days.

And now for your amusement.... Wonder if this is the same grading system that AuctionKings use to grade their coins.

If that is the case, I'm glad I didn't pick it up. Another AuctionKing style seller apparently. They are calling it CH BU GEM, which 'm seeing what you're are seeing. Thank you! Here is the listing for those who are curious. https://www.ebay.com/itm/275598308191

I am in the market for a 1901 and see that this appears to be decent. What would you grade it as? Thanks!

They do, I have sent back two of the seven items already, I should send them all back tbh. This was only in-expensive item I have purchased from them and is not worth my time. My guess is that AuctionKings sends put junk if the fetch the dollar they were hoping for. Then when you leave anything other than positive feedback they guilt trip you and offer a partial refund. Absolutely crazy some of the crap I have received, this isn't the worst. Buyer beware with AuctionKings.

Based on a request, here it is. My seventh and final coin came in the mail today from AuctionKings on eBay. Ordered on December 14th arrived today 12/29/2022. Not sure myself, but I am pretty sure this is not the same dime I ordered, what do you think? LOL Fortunately, this was the only inexpensive coin I purchased from them, but three of the seven coins were not even close to what was described and shown in the auction listing, and the other four were not as bad, but definitely not as close to what was described and shown.

Just got my Mercury Dime in the mail that I ordered on December 14th. Wow Auction Kings an absolute match lololol. Criminals. To make eBay a stronger case, I am tempted to buy more in order to keep better documentation and evidence if need be.

Very nice, thank you numismatic student! Life is an adventure of learning and in a lot of cases spending money. I've learned to enjoy what I do and recently it's been falling in love with coins and the history of them. Luckily I have a good job and can avoid to lose a little here and there, it beats what I paid to go to college haha.

I appreciate it and can understand the perspective of why some would be irritated. I have been known for being gullible it I like to think of it as trusting. At the end of the day I exchanged a little bit of time and tape and learned a lot. I appreciate all the feedback even the ones that appear to be irritated with the discussion. Thank you for a great community!

Well for this I only had a "reputable" (so I thought based on feedback), photos and description. Seeing this coin in this condition at my trusted LCS, I personally would pay $96.99 and send it in for grading. This was to prove that if you see a coin in real life that looks like MS, a scarce date/mint, and is what I consider a good deal, I would buy it. I'm guessing most of us don't mind scoring a deal on a beautiful coin. Had I seen this coin in person and it is was in the condition it actually is, I would had never purchased it. The only thing I hope is that I am not as stupid as some may think I am, but maybe I am haha.

kbbpll - I agree with your opinion. That's why I'm here so that I can learn and avoid such situations in the future. It is no secret that I want to score a deal. When I sell something, I give a deal (not only coins), so sometimes I don't mind getting one myself. The only thing lost with this deal was my time, but in return I am smarter and so will other people. Plus I get a laugh out of some of the comments on here. I'm guessing this forum is here to protect and help educate folks in the coin community so I do not see the issue with posting topics like this. I feel like some are offended by them, if this is the consensus I will stop posting these type of articles.

I always appreciate the feedback. The reason for the thread is to find out if you were in a store and had this coin, 1879-o, in hand and the quality resembled the grade comparable to the grade in these photos, would you pick it up for $96.99. I personally (doubt I'm the only one that will) learned a little from these responses, and that is one reason I start forums like this. Thank you for the comments!

CarrsCoins:

"i voted no for a couple reasons.

ive never seen a real coin look like that. if it looks like that in hand something is wrong.

i wouldnt buy it online because the picture is doctored. its not rocket science to take decent pictures of coins. if someone is doctoring their images of coins they are a novice at best and more often they are maliciously hiding something.

most importantly for me I wouldnt buy it because its the wrong size and metal but thats a different converstaion entirely. Morgan dollars arent my style..

if I were going to buy it based off those pictures I would treat it as a cleaned AU. id probably offer $50 or 60 and hope they didnt take it."

Jacrispies - have you reviewed the eBay listing for this...? My purchase was based not only on the title, but also on the photos. I'm not sure what you would grade this coin based on the photos in eBay listing, but I certainly thought it was a higher grade than the actual coin received, as evidenced by the photos I've shared. Not knowing what you know now based off of my thread here, what would you have graded this coin based on the listing. Here is is the listing:
