Haha, I would have loved to see my great grandfather frying this up on the stove! As it was, I think the toning is from an old cardboard album folder. But who knows what it went through before the 1960's! Others I have are purple, some similar to this one, some with red staining and some obvious green damage. But VF20-AU details is quite the range and solidifies I know nothing about grading copper. |

I know this isn't a high value coin at all. Just trying to etablish an idea of grade to go off of for the rest I have. I thought this one was pretty so I'm using it as an example. Would love to learn more about copper. There are also a lot of damaged coins and I wonder if they are worth trying to save. Corrosion and verdigris mainly. Thanks

Yeah the more I look into it, the more I think I'll just leave them alone in their album. they have some fun toning going on but nothing individually worth 1k or more. I just had an Economy PCGS order with a turn around time of 30 days, so I was thinking while they weren't too busy, maybe I'd throw a few more 1800's us quarters in and throw an order of Newfies in the same box, but eh, not worth it. I'll concentrate on other coins that are worth it. Nice toning picture added for fun.

I have an 1885 Newfoundland 10 cent for grading. Just curious others opinions because it's a rarer coin. I have a really hard time finding values for Newfoundlands, so if you have an idea on what this coin might be worth, I would like to hear that too. Right now I just use coins and Canada site. Considering sending this one to PCGS As always thanks for your insights!

I just bought some lighthouse albums too (the gold ones) and some airtite pages and 2x2 pages. I think I'm going to use them to house the bulk of the collection. I bought a few to try out first before buying a bunch just in case I didn't like them. Happy organizing! |

Jbuck, I totally understand that. This one is strangely sentimental even though I didn't complete it myself and I did not inherit it. I bought it some 5/6 years ago off ebay for my son to play with coins with my dad (who was the big coin collector), a way for them to bond. So I bought it complete, in the album for about $160 range I think. I always write notes to the seller about where their items are going and I ended up striking up a really nice conversation with an older lady who informed me that the coins were her late husbands and they didn't have any children so she was selling things on ebay. She was touched about the story of my buying the set for my 8 yr old that she added sweet notes to him about how to keep them nice, and to not clean them. She also added a couple buffalo nickels and some uncirculated quarter mint sets for him too. There is a real human factor about coin collecting and I will never forget that. So yeah, the ike collection is special to us and I feel quite attached to it. I think about that lady often and wished I had went back and looked at anything else she might have sold, but I didnt. I did keep all her notes and extras with the Ikes too. |
