I don't know what I'm looking at and I actually did spend a quite a bit of time trying to figure it out before bothering you all but I'm here obviously so my research didn't pan out. Thanks
Good to hear it has retained some value at least. Would counterfeiters be attempting to replicate this right off the bat? I guess they probably could have known it was going to be desirable given the mint numbers right?. I just ask because it's been in the family since at least 1890. Well that's how the story goes anyway because my great grandmother is supposedly wearing this coin around her neck in a photo taken that year. I guess it was a fairly popular thing to do at the time.
This thing has obviously seen better days but I'm wondering if there's still value in it and also if it could have been a fake even though the reeds number 89. Thanks
Just wondering how to refer to whatever is going at the top and bottom within the columns. Also if there were no hand punched MM's after '90, if you were to see what appears to be one like on this coin does that indicate the entire obverse could be doubled or just specific areas? Thanks
I will upload a complete set of pics this evening. Acetone has already been onboard during the restoration process and there really is absolutely no gunk. That's just the metal. My apologies for not providing the entirety of pictures though, I am just a feeble minded rookie here but as soon as I'm done with the girls track practice I'll have them for you. Thanks fellas
If it's a PB would not the toothpick have confirmed it? It's solid and really just looks like a tilted D. Maybe I should just bore it out on the drill press and get to the bottom of it
I've seen another post on here with a similar inquiry and their coin looked similar but maybe not as clear as this one. Could this possibly be misplaced mint mark and if not what am I looking at? Thanks
