Just a few comments - not sure what the answer is. I have some of these from 1986 and the certificates say most are at 28.28 gm but one is at 27.22 gm. These were both made at the Royal British Mint. Perhaps they got mixed up with the blanks with yours? I guess that might explain one but not many variances. Yours looks good and I doubt it is worth the effort to counterfeit.

Regarding a publication I have the Concise Catalogue of Modern Chinese Copper Coins, 2nd Edition. I find it hard to use but it does have good pictures.
Below is a description - you can find it a few places - I went through this excellent site and seller - https://coincoin.com/
"Concise Catalogue of Modern Chinese Copper Coins (2nd Ed.) This Western-friendly Chinese coppers catalog features excellent, slightly-enlarged photos and Woodward references for many varieties. The level of varieties distinguished is well beyond KM/SCWC but not quite as fine as Woodward, Duan, and various other Chinese works. Numerous enlarged detail panels help distinguish varieties, important given lack of clear descriptions and decent photos in the KM/SCWC. Unique numbering system, Renminbi valuations in five grades, Chinese text. Western auctions often references this work ("CL") and in working up a huge stock I found it, along with Woodward, to be the most practical reference for Western collectors. The larger-format 2018 2nd edition adds a few types with "a" numbers, many more detail insets, and completely revised pricing. A quick takeaway on the pricing changes since 2012 is the greater separation between grades (particularly in the EF-MS60 range), reflecting the maturing of the market. Hardcover, higher list price, and new difficulties importing Chinese books to the US contribute to the higher cost. 294p, 7.5x10", hc, 2018" |

First of all - nice coin! I am no expert but the few I have like this one (earlier date) have a high rounded rim that appear to help keep the coin looking good because the rim gets beat first. Yours has a nice flatter rim showing no wear. The ones on the link appear to have a rounded rim. Just an observation.

No responses so I will try - but I am not an expert. It looks real to me - I do collect these. What does it weigh? Book says 13.5 grams. I would guess a fake would attempt to be a higher grade - this one I would call Fine. The overall look is right to me - perhaps a cleaning at one time. I don't know of any varieties for this one other than chop marks.

Very nice, the sharpest I have seen - thanks for posting it. On these I have a hard time figuring out the date. 1912 is Year 1 but I don't see a 1? I see the 50 at the bottom of the first picture but within the circle it looks like a 4 above and a 3 below the center flower. What am I missing? |

Colonialjohn - Got a question for you. I noticed a seller on eBay who had some porcelain pieces with gold highlights which looked a little too bright. I wondered if the gold coloring was added recently as a way to "enhance" the pieces. Do you think your testing could determine if this is the case by comparing the results from pieces we know are genuine? I don't have any but just curious about the possibility. |
