 Th3ch0s3n0ne, welcome to the community!
I'm new to numismatics (coin collecting), too. I have found dozens of these types of events, especially on dimes! I just found a "run" of die chips on the reverse of 2023 dimes on the oak branch (the one to the right of the torch), with each successive dime having a larger chip on it. Are they worth anything? Eh, you might be able to get a buck or two on eBay for a really big die chip, but it's not anything particularly special or valuable. From what I've gathered in the 4-6 weeks of digging into coins, most will tell you to spend coins with die chips like every other regular dime. Personally, if I can find a run like the one I found today, I keep them as a fun example of how die wear occurs and how long it takes for the quality control experts at the mint to catch it. .gif" class="inlineimg" alt="" title="" />
If it's interesting to you, keep it. If it's not worth it, don't. You can try your luck on eBay, or toss it in the discard pile and keep searching. I collect with my son, and he and I like finding all sorts of oddities. Most of them are "worthless", but the time spent together is priceless.
Happy hunting! |

Jdoe, I found that picture, too. This coin seems to have features of both reverses as far as steps go, so I'm hoping there's a more nuanced way to tell. My eyes are blurry at this point! haha |

dsking, it's all good. Yours wasn't the comment that irked me. Just wanted to remind some of the old pros that they were once green and needed teaching, not dismissing, too. My grandfather collected wheat pennies, and just before he passed, he gave them to me. My dad collected foreign coins, and he passed when I was really young of cancer. Anyway, I kept both collections stashed for YEARS. We moved a couple of years ago, and my son found them and asked what they were. He and I looked through them and it brought back some pretty awesome memories. So I started collecting coins myself. We both enjoy it, and finding oddballs like this is exciting - which is really saying something because we both have ADHD! I wish there were better sources for information on errors and varieties, but what I have found thus far on the interwebs is sensationalism and more YouTube Billy Mays wannabes than I can stand. .gif" class="inlineimg" alt="" title="" /> |

Okay, so then why does it look like two nines for each 9? I'm still trying to figure out this microscope, so I apologize for the pictures being less than perfect. Please also forgive me that I'm new to this and would really appreciate help/guidance in knowing what to look for instead of just being shot down. Thanks!

Alright, fast on the heels of my sore disappointment with the 2020-P dime, I was given a Hail Mary in a roll of pennies. A DDO date on a 1992-D LMC. There appears to be a bit of coupling in Mr. Lincoln's beard as well. I also found some interesting markings on the reverse, along the rim by the "UNITED STATES", but I'm not 100% whether that is also doubled die or not. Interested in everyone's thoughts and feedback - thanks in advance!

Oddguy guessed it. (I'm embarrassed!!) When I was trying to get a better image, I ended up chipping whatever it was off of one section. Some of it is permanently on there, but some of it came off. *sigh* Beginner's mistake.
I did find something else today that's legitimately an error, but on a different coin. Trying to determine if it's a unique enough error to post about. |
