Thanks for the pics, panzaldi. Yes, I like the knob on ear variety as well.

What do you think details it, panzaldi? Rim hits or stain?

Interesting testing, and a result I'm pleasantly surprised by. I just picked up another coin to try this process on.

I don't know what else I could do to this coin at this point. Long path to get where it is now, but I think the coin has benefitted. Obverse stain at K8 is less noticeable. Overall, the surface of the coin looks better than it did when I received it. I wonder if it would still details, but I'll never bother to TPG it - just not worth the expense.

As far as grade goes, I think this has to be an EF45. Pictures are from an 1855 NGC slabbed as EF45. Mine has more detail than this one.

So I wanted to update this thread. I figured I was in the experiment mode with this coin so I bought a bottle of Classic Coin Conditioner as luvmyCAM suggested. Used as directed. I'll let you all judge the results.

Not a banknote, but I suppose a promissory note if some kind. I have others from 1840 that were issued by canal companies. I have several other railroad company notes from the Civil War era.

Had this note for a long while and wondered if any of you have seen another. Frankly, printing money on the back of old bonds doesn't inspire much confidence. First two pictures are straight. I manipulated the color on the third so you can see the inverted train better. I wonder if this really is bill #372. Wonder how many were printed?

Thanks, luvmyCAM. I may give it a shot. I'm into this coin at $40, so it's not a bad one to experiment on a bit. I appreciate the comments - good food for thought. I've seen some people say they give every coin they buy raw an acetone soak, but my results have been anything but predictable.

I'm thinking it's around EF40, which is what it cost me.

How long did you do acetone and then how long with Verdicare? I just had some poor results with an 1855 Bradied hair cent and would love to know your secret. Fantastic results!!

Got this coin very cheaply and it was one I wanted with the big second 5 - N6/R3. I decided to try acetone followed by Verdicare for the obverse stain. Frankly, I'm sorry I didn't just leave it alone. The acetone accentuated verdigris and the Verdicare didn't help. 24 hour soak in acetone followed by a 24 hour soak in verdicare - obverse only. First two pics - coin as received, second two - after acetone, third obverse only after Verdicare. What gives?

Coin arrived today. I'm very pleased. Can one of you explain why this doesn't make MS63-BN? Fields look good. Two small stains on reverse - is that the reason? Very nice coin in hand.

That coin seems way undergraded. Got to be at least 63PL - maybe 64PL. Just a beauty.

I have to say it's really nice to find a community that has the knowledge to appreciate this story. I know my grandfather would get a kick out of it all these years later. Been meaning to post this - glad I did.

Coinfrog, I always wondered about that too - seemed a bit too handy to me, especially as I got older and started learning about how long it had been since large notes had been in common circulation. I do know that at another point Snyder gave my grandfather a $20 gold piece from 1891 because that was his birthday. That's gone, unfortunately. Who knows if this story about this note (told to me as a kid 60 years ago) is completely true - if it's not, it oughtta be. That said, the note exists; it's Snyder's signature without doubt and my grandfather worked with him as long as he was Sec Treas. Seems like he left in early '48, but I'm not sure. My grandfather left in Fall of '48, I think.

It's exciting to even see that coin. She's a beauty, but I'm not buying MS - looks like a little wear at eyebrow and in hair. Also, BTW, she needs to get her hair done - it's a mess. You'd think somebody would have had a brush before they did her bust.

In 1947/1948 my grandfather was appointed as Under Secretary of the Treasury serving under John W. Snyder. The story goes that my grandfather carried a worn silver dollar and was kidding with Secretary Snyder one day about the intrinsic value of hard currency over paper money with only a promise to back it up with silver. Snyder whereupon produced a dollar bill, flipped it over and wrote "Certified John W. Snyder" on the back. He handed it to my grandfather saying something to the effect of "I think this one is good." My grandfather carried it for many years telling the story. Consequently, the bill is quite worn, and has no value in that respect. That said, I wouldn't part with it for anything.

I generally think ANACS overgrades somewhat, but in this case I think it's pretty close. Might even make MS-63 BN, but I'm leaving well enough alone. Very happy with this one.
