I don't know what else I could do to this coin at this point. Long path to get where it is now, but I think the coin has benefitted. Obverse stain at K8 is less noticeable. Overall, the surface of the coin looks better than it did when I received it. I wonder if it would still details, but I'll never bother to TPG it - just not worth the expense.
As far as grade goes, I think this has to be an EF45. Pictures are from an 1855 NGC slabbed as EF45. Mine has more detail than this one.

Had this note for a long while and wondered if any of you have seen another. Frankly, printing money on the back of old bonds doesn't inspire much confidence. First two pictures are straight. I manipulated the color on the third so you can see the inverted train better. I wonder if this really is bill #372. Wonder how many were printed?

Coinfrog, I always wondered about that too - seemed a bit too handy to me, especially as I got older and started learning about how long it had been since large notes had been in common circulation. I do know that at another point Snyder gave my grandfather a $20 gold piece from 1891 because that was his birthday. That's gone, unfortunately. Who knows if this story about this note (told to me as a kid 60 years ago) is completely true - if it's not, it oughtta be. That said, the note exists; it's Snyder's signature without doubt and my grandfather worked with him as long as he was Sec Treas. Seems like he left in early '48, but I'm not sure. My grandfather left in Fall of '48, I think. |

It's exciting to even see that coin. She's a beauty, but I'm not buying MS - looks like a little wear at eyebrow and in hair. Also, BTW, she needs to get her hair done - it's a mess. You'd think somebody would have had a brush before they did her bust. |

In 1947/1948 my grandfather was appointed as Under Secretary of the Treasury serving under John W. Snyder. The story goes that my grandfather carried a worn silver dollar and was kidding with Secretary Snyder one day about the intrinsic value of hard currency over paper money with only a promise to back it up with silver. Snyder whereupon produced a dollar bill, flipped it over and wrote "Certified John W. Snyder" on the back. He handed it to my grandfather saying something to the effect of "I think this one is good." My grandfather carried it for many years telling the story. Consequently, the bill is quite worn, and has no value in that respect. That said, I wouldn't part with it for anything.
