Yes, a RP'd 5 and narrow 9 from, probably, a worn die plus the worn coin. The 8 looks like physical damage.

unless you want to put a Turner or Haxby number on them. I think, that for the last 20 or so years, it was no longer called a "wide 9", just a 9/8. Why CaC still has the 9/8 in parenthesis, I'll never know.

Since the last digit was hand-punched (it took 2-3 whacks), the 9 can be high, a little high, somewhat high, very high ad infinitum. The same goes for the lows and how low is low. And the same goes for far and near and all the verys and somewhats. Why the designation of "low 9" got applied to the 59's is beyond me. The same goes for the 1896 and the description of how far or wide is the 6? The last I knew was that they did away with the designation of the 1896 "far 6", because there were 10-12 positions that the 6 could be, including slants and cants. Don't worry about it, it's lower than the 5.

I'm at XF 40/45. I see wear on the monarch and characters/design on the Rev. With a little gunk/grimes in the nooks and crannies, I'd say cleaned at some time in the past, not recent. Too many nicks/dings on the Obv for AU.

Out of the thousands of 1859's that I've either had, or looked at during shows/auctions, I never looked for clashes on them. I was just interested in the Reverses, because that's where the varieties I was looking for were located. I can honestly say I'd never seen one with that date, but I ALWAYS looked at the 1881 reverses. Good catch, Scott.

Stick the dime (or another one) in a small glass of CocaCola and see what happens in a week or two, refreshing it..

It looks like it was worn as a necklace of sort, either metal or leather, for some reason. I think it's fine F detail, hole and cleaned and worth about $20 Cdn. It's a hole fitter for someone.

Cents are not used at all here in Canada since 2012. Purchases are rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents, if paying in cash. If you purchase something with a credit card, it's not rounded up or down and it's the exact price to the cent. Most merchants won't take them. Lots of piggy banks up here with money that can't be spent.

It looks like the scratches were on the planchet, before the die made it a coin.

If they are recessed, like scratches, maybe something with the ejector?

To me, it looks like the 9 got hit/scraped with something just from circulation. The 4 doesn't look doubled to me. The same thing that gouged the 7 also took the triangular corner of the 4

I think that this is the one that you have on this CCF 5/5 entry. Broken vine (twice) and broken stem, XF40+

Yes, I see the 5 that may have been repunched. I see a bit on the 2, but don't think that it is a double die, at least to my way of looking at doublings of Vicky large cents. Maybe by modern graders with modern coins, the strict definition of double die has changed. I don't do anything with any 20th or 21st century coins. Sorry for my post.

The only doubling I see on either coin dates, is just a little MD or die deterioration. The photos are too small/fuzzy to see anything on the Obv, so I don't know what you are referring to.
