It isn't just the discrepancy with the nickel totals. If you go to the official US mint website they will break down the total mintages of each of the 2024 Women's quarters and indicate a grand total of all women's P quarters at 858.8 million, and all the D quarters at 822 million. On this same site if you look under circulating coinage for 2024 it will indicate 525 million P quarters and 537.2 million D quarters. In other words, one official mint record doesn't jive with another official mint record.
Yes Marve, you would think that the mint figures would be correct but you have to wonder how efficient the government is in releasing accurate current information. According to the official mint records, they indicate a lower number of 2024 nickels produced than that of 2009. Can that be right?
Wondering if anybody has a reliable source for the final 2024 mintage figures of circulating US coins? I went to the US Mint site and found the production numbers seem to differ significantly (lower) than information I found on coinnews.net which actually seems more logical than what the mint has reported. One example is that the mint reported 69.5 million P and D nickels in total while the other site indicated around 113 million in total. I don't know which figures to believe.
Many of the Ike Dollars are plagued with heavy bag marks. Any that can grade MS-65 and better are worthy of consideration. The reverse of the 1972 P type two was struck from proof dies which is why that style earth exists on both the 1972P business strike and the proof but it is only valuable on the business strike from Philadelphia. The 1973 P and D were mint set only coins and command a small premium. The 1971 thru 1974 blue Ikes and Brown Ikes are 40% silver as are the Three coin Bicentennial sets.
My sincere condolences and total respect for your fathers service and all others who have honorably served. Shame he didn't acquire one of the WWII escape gold kits. They were a set of gold coins and rings sealed in a rubberized package intended to be used as a bartering tool should the pilot be shot down over enemy territory. I often wonder how many of these sets are still undiscovered from shot down aircraft.
That is a good move returning the 78CC. A better one will come along. The new reverse pic of the 98 O looks good and I would agree with a 65 reverse. The obverse looks a little lack luster from the pics and out of focus. I would ask for better pics of the obverse. PCGS has an interesting article concerning the 98 O and how rare they are to find in circulated grades. You might want to read this link. Scroll down the page for the article. Best of luck whatever you decide. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1898-o-1/7254
@Silverskunk, it is hard to assess the 98 O coin from just a picture of the obverse in that slab. I do recommend starting a new thread on the subject if you are interested. Posting here is like hijacking another members thread. Do you have pics of the reverse of that 98 O?
Many of these early halves exhibit some form of strike weakness, not to be confused with wear. I believe that is the case here with some of the flatness. Due to lack of luster I would call it AU-50
I realize how rare this coin is with a mintage of only 500 and in a respectable MS-64 grade. With that said, high end coins like this are meant for investment purposes, not for the average collector. While PCGS may place a value of $95K on this coin, how many people would actually be in for that? I see two recent Heritage Auctions (01/25) in which this same grade coin went for $60K and $78K respectively. Even if I could afford it, I would rather prefer stacking bullion VS this coin. Bullion would be more of a liquid asset than this risky rarity in my opinion.
This site is full of experts and they are all telling you nicely that your coin is not genuine. If you want to insist that it is then go ahead and send it to a TPG and please post the pictures of your slabbed coin when you get it back.
with Fortcollins. Terribly undergraded by NGC and with the opinions provided here by our experts all seemingly in the same range of high XF- low AU. I would crack it out and keep it raw. I would also mention the reverse clash on a 2x2 for it.
E&V, I know the site to which you refer. I frequent it too as I suspect many other members do as well. I wonder why it is not allowed on this site. After all, CCF allows us to link to ebay and other sources. Why not this one? That site has good information especially for identifying varieties.
