The biggest idea I want to push hard for, has to wait 5 years... In 2017, Canada's oldest scientific institution, the Geological Survey of Canada, will be 175 years old - it is older than Canada itself. The RCM missed the boat in 1992 (150th)...  Of course, there is that little thing about Canada being 150 years old in 2017... but hey, a little competition for attention can be a good thing! We could even throw a Bruce Trail coin in there. One of the world's 13 Unesco Biospheres. That could have been a nice throw in for our Parks Canada theme this year. A coin that represents our past, present, and future, since the Bruce Trail is growing and only getting stronger. Obviously that didn't get any consideration when I submitted it.

Hi Carolyn,
I have a coin idea that I just submitted to the themes@mint.ca email.
I was thinking since 2014 will be the 100th anniversary of the transaction of Winnie (Winnie the Pooh) in White River, Ontario, it wouldn't be a bad idea to commemorate it.
I know 2014 is still a while from now, but the Mint may want to start early on it depending on how much detail they want to get into it.
But I was thinking, since Winnie was sold for $20, we could make a $20 commemorative about Winnie.
Maybe even a $20 for $20. Or "Buy a bear for $20".

Awesome idea on the Winnie. And to !@#$ with the Disney version too, stick with either real life or the first sketches (if Disney haven't bought it all up)

Lithanial, you are very chatty today and that's ok. Love your Winnie idea! It may well be in the works already because our main product plan is planned out years in advance. Of course we allow for what we call "drop ins" but the big dates don't sneak up on us. That's why I think (and like you, I hope) that Winnie is in the 2014 plan. Glad you emailed your idea to themes@mint.ca = good job!
Re Halloween being a big thing, I personally agree with you. It's a part of every child's heritage. So maybe there is a way to do it? Did you submit that idea and the way your worded here to themes@mint.ca = you should. You've convinced me on the idea but it would require more than me to make it happen. Maybe this forum pushes for the idea? Power in numbers!

Lithanial, Disney may in fact have all the rights making it impossible for us. Still looking into it...
But on the bright side, there could be some potential for a Halloween-theme especially if the design could tap into some traditional element of Halloween. Keep the faith and email themes@mint.ca!

I'd much rather have more "classic" designs ... for instance, I've always liked the 1967 Centennial series (maybe something more along those lines)

Part of the appeal of the 1967 coins is that, relatively speaking, the fields on the reverse are huge. I prefer a simple, elegant design, with large clean fields. That is why I never really liked Canadian 50c coins, the reverse is way to "busy" for me.

Interesting comment about 50 cents SPP. I find 50 cents one of the most attractive designs. Not sure why, but since I am a kid I just keep hoarding/buying.  |

Hmmm? => I agree with both of you => I admit that the simple, sleek designs are usually more eye-appealing ... but I also agree that the good ol' 50-cent piece, with its Coat of Arms design, is a very appealing classic coin ...
NOTE => I'm definitely attracted to more "classic" designs, than I am to the modern "theme designs", such as Halloween and/or Disney (no offense Lithanial ... to each his own ... that's what makes coin collecting interesting)

I don't take any offense other than the Disney association. I was referring to the Canadian heritage moments aspect of Winnie. Not the cartoony stuff today.
I just think it would be cool doing the $20 for $20 exchange program for a coin with a little cub on it. The $20 represents how much Winnie was sold for.

As for the Halloween coins. I completely know it is ridiculously gimmicky. Beyond anything that has been done. Which is why I think it could be popular among children. I just feel that the circulation quarter programs are a perfect way to introduce children to coin collecting.
These new upcoming quarters are a step in the right direction, but it still isn't as fun as Halloween. Imagine children trading witches, pirates, goblins, mummies, vampires, etc. I know this is never going to happen, I can't see the Mint putting these designs on coins, but this is a huge part of our modern and past heritage.
