I have also some old german notes issued by cities.
I need to search for them in order to make some scans.
Paper money is not my theme of interest. But I will try to find them in the coming days.

I couldn't get your pics of the Austrian note to work, scoutjim, until I changed the "%20"'s in the URL to square brackets. I don't think the forum software likes handling square brackets in the filename. I'll have a go at showing Scoutjim's note (it works in preview):   I have a couple of notgeld, kriegsgeld and similar pieces. Here are a couple of my better specimens:   Heidelburg 10 pfennig, "kreigsgeld". This one flies to a magnet, so it's likely made of pure iron. Heidelberg is a university city in southwest Germany and still uses the same lion-on-black-background coat of arms that's portrayed on this token.   Ohrdruf POW Camp 5 pfennig. This one is also attracted to a magnet, but extremely weakly - strange. It either has a thin plating of iron over something cheaper, like zinc, or perhaps a thin sheet of iron with a thick zinc plate. Ohrdruf is a small town in central Germany and was apparently the site both for a POW camp in WWI and a POW/concentration camp in WWII. This token is apparently from WWI; no WWII tokens are listed in the Coffing catalogue. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I've got a couple of paper examples as well; this one I think is the most interesting. It's a private coupon from Hoerde, which was a small city near Dortmund in western Germany, now assimilated into the Ruhr urban agglomeration.  According to the Wikipedia article for Hoerde, "Phoenix" was an industrial park in the heart of the city, now being turned into parkland. It's an excellent example of hyperinflationary notgeld. Originally issued in November 1923 with a face value of 5000 marks, it was re-evaluated to 1,000,000 marks at some later stage. As near as I can work out, the fine print translates to: "This coupon must be submitted after call-in with our main office in Hoerde or with the Urban Savings Bank in Hoerde or with the Darmstad National Bank in Dortmund for redemption." The green circle is a cancellation hole-punch. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Very nice. I have once seen proably a complete set of Notegeld germany and Austria any way with out all the Variation's the Guy has a Coin shop but will not sell them.

If you are really interested into German Notgeld, you should have a look at http://www.muenzen-strothotte.de/They have an incredible offer of such coins. Unfortunately their offer isn't available online but you can order their catalogue. They also have a very large stock of coin literature about all themes. |
