The obverse looks like a perfect match for 101A. The only thing I can think of on the reverse is that the scratch was on the planchet prior to striking. A very cool piece!

Nice coin Mike. If you ever want to get rid of it keep my name handy. I'm sure that I could find a home for it. (VBG)

Thanks folks! ND and Catman, what do you think the 1838 Bust Half (photo's a few posts back) would grade at? With the rim nick do you think PCGS or NGC would grade it or bag it?(or drop the grade so much it would be a waste of money). Morgan Fred, Susan and a Buddy who is a dealer say they think it's worth a shot. My dealer Buddy says without the nick it's a 64/65 coin. What's your take on that? Iwould really appreciate any opinions on the grade and odds of a sucessful submission! Thanks, Mike Mike

I am assuming that the color is off due to the picture. With that in mind, the rim bump appears to be pretty deep. Again this is based on the pic. It may not look that bad in person. PCGS is going to take a long hard look, and if the denticles are damaged, this coin will end up in a body bag. If they are not damaged, you can expect a 62/63. Having the bump on the obverse will take a full point off of the grade.

Mike,
I really can't give an honest opinion on what the two slabbing companies would do. I don't purchase any from either slabbing company nor do I submit coins to either slabbing company.

ND, the hit does not quite touch the denticles and it is a little less obtrusive in person. The color is off because of me playing with and trying to learn about lighting. It is very pretty. No toning and quite frankly it looks freshly minted. Catman, barring the TPG'S what do you think of the coin overall? Thanks Guys! Mike

Same reason I didn't reply.

Hi Mike, I don't know how to answer however If you ever get tired of it I have a special place that I wouldn't mind putting it at all..! It would look good in my personal collection. (of course if you decide to get rid of it I will have to be faster than Susan to get it..! Fat chance I have at that..!)catman

This is why it is so hard to grade using pics. Too many factors in lighting, editing programs, and the such. Overall it is a nice coin. For the date and condition I would not worry too much about PCGS.

ND, Thanks, I'm a bit confused as I'm not sure what your answer about PCGS means! Mike

I am so jealous! A fugio! One of my all time favorites. Big time on my want list and that is the exact grade range I want one in too - a nice circulated example!

Thanks Stujoe, The coin has become one of my favorites. The condition of this coin is better than other 35's I've looked at (on Heritage and such). All numerals on the dial are clear. The chain loops on the reverse are complete. All of the finer details are visable and the color is a wonderful medium brown. It meets all the grading criteria for an EF40 grade. I have a new addiction! I have started shopping for Colonials! Mike [:p]

What I meant was PCGS will slab the coin if the hit is not too deep or distracting. By your description, it sounds as if it will fly through the process.
