The rust pits aren't there and the imperfect crossbar in the 4 isn't there. The date on my specimen, matches a coin that reallized 66K at heritage.

These might help. A PCGS PR63.

The date appears a little heavier, but the crossbar of the 4 runs uphill from right to left on both coins. It could be that the die was refurbished after striking the proofs. The 4 is not broken on my coin, but the imperfection inside the 4 looks to be there.

I was looking at the image of the one I bought and was a little bit concerned about the rounded inside corners of the crosslet and where it meets with the vertical part of the 4. It has the same appearance on the PCGS coin.

I had a Shield nickel once that somebody had manipulated the surfaces on. I returned it to the seller, but it looked like the entire surface had been finely machined and polished after the fact. The work was sloppy around the stars and much of the legend.

Chance.

The vertical bars in Liberty's shield are different. I think they call them "thunes". No doubt it's a business strike, but it's a dandy nonetheless.

I'd submit it regardless. The toning is very nice.

Interesting note ... the 1844 proof has 4 stripes per "thune" where the business strike has 3.

I was mistaken ... both of these have 3 stripes.

Buying this coin has really raised the bar for the "with Motto" variety for my type set. I feel really fortunate to have been able to swing the purchase of this one. It cost me a roll of ROTM Peace dollars and 200 dollars. I may have to wait awhile before finding that kind of deal on the later version.

It's veteran's day and the post office is closed, but I believe this one should arrive tomorrow. It was located just 3 hours east of me.

I'm going to dump the Dansco album. I had it out this morning, and the slides are all scuffed up. I think these albums are terribly dangerous to coins. I'm going to build a mahogany cabinet to house my type set, and each coin will be in an airtite capsule. You can buy the flocked lighthouse trays for about 5 dollars a shot. I have lots of leftover honduras mahogany from my trade. Seems natural to me to build a cabinet.

Of course, that means that this one, as much as I might like to know how it would grade at a TPG, will remain raw.

I am real pleased with the pictures. I just hope they're testimony to the quality/grade of the coin and not the skill level of the photographer. I know my little 89 dollar Kodak can't produce that image.

That sounds like an excellent trade to me. Spending about half the apparent value of the Seated dollar, you can't go wrong.

Well, I got the coin yesterday, and have put off posting this, but the pictures are a testimony to the skill level of the photographer, and don't accurately depict the coin. In the flesh, it's a dead gun metal grey, and there's some significant rash on Liberty's face and head that washes out in intense light. It worth what I paid, I'm sure, and the digits in the date are incredibly crisp....but overall, a 55 might even be tough to come by.

I thought about exposing the identity of the dealer, but if you want to know, it won't be hard to find this coin in ebay's completed listings. If they use trick photography on one .... they probably use it on all of their offerings, so it might do you well to know who the seller is.

I'll post a picture or 2 of my own when I get a chance to take some.
