I think I'll do OK ... if all I did was buy nearly a half a roll of scrap silver half dollars for 97 dollars del'd. That's like the "good old days" price these days.

I'd have bought it for that price, for sure. You can't go wrong.

I actually bought the same exact set a few months ago when silver was over $40/ounce. I think I paid around $119 for it, thinking that it was a decent deal at $12 per coin since melt value was around $14-15 at the time.

Well, first of all, the box was very nice and every coin was in its own plastic capsule. As for the coins themselves, the newer ones were in terrific shape and the older ones were about what you'd expect. Nothing horrible, but nothing really exciting, either. Since I really liked the display case, I ended up swapping out some of the earlier coins with better examples from my collection. This was before I started working on my 7070 Type Album, btw, so up until that point I didn't really have any way to display my coins.

Anyway, I certainly don't regret getting it, although I wish I could have gotten it for $89! In general, I agree that these sets were made for suckers, but that was back when silver was at $4/ounce. Many years ago I got a "Vanishing Classic" set from one of the ersatz "mints" for something like $4.99 and it included horribly worn examples of a Barber Half, Quarter and Dime. At the time, I was disappointed, since the coins were really, really worn, almost to the point of being unrecognizable. I did end up getting the last laugh, however, since about the same time I bought my "America's Great Silver Half Dollar Collection" on ebay I also broke out the three Barber coins from that earlier set and sold them as a lot of "junk silver" for $32.

Thanks Dave .... I tried paint dot net, and picasa ... and really couldn't get the image cleaned up enough to tell too awful much, except that they aren't all polished as I'd surmised at first. This one was a no brainer. I pushed the button before I studied too long and hard on it.

I just got an email from the guy a little while ago. He's already delivered them to the post office and sent them via priority mail, so they'll be in my grubby little paws before the weekend. It's nice when the seller keeps you informed like that. He'll get glowing feedback.

Yeah, at the price this is a no-brainer even if they're polished. All I did was pull the Levels down to correct the serious overexposure, and found good reason to believe the older 3 still have original color. Not conclusive, but encouraging. If they're original, you got the set for the value of the Bustie alone.

I just made a commitment to get out of the 7070. I am still building a cabinet of mahogany to house it .... so I can sell the case to somebody who travels to coin shows, but I picked up this outfit, which has 100 2x2 spaces. That's more than the Dansco 7070 so if I want to add the earlier issues, this system will accomodate them. I also have the added benefit of having individually encapsulated coins and never the risk of scratches from the slides.

This was on sale at Vernon coin for less than I could buy the trays alone elsewhere, by the time you figure in the free shipping.

Oh -- and if it makes you feel better about your purchase, here is one on ebay with a Buy It Now price of "only" $254.99 (and that's after a 15% discount!)

I did the same thing, Dave, and I think I see a gown line on the bust half. I think this might turn out to be a "good git".

Yes, the Washington commem is 90%. The set pictured (from elsewhere) has a cupro-nickel clad liberty commemorative halfwhich is substituted in my set for a 1968 40% Kennedy. That set had 9 of 10 silver while the set I bought has all 10 silver half dollars ... though the 68 Kennedy and the Bicentennial Kennedy are both 40% silver clad coins.

I'll take a picture of the group sans box when they arrive. My Mrs has a bunch of colored pencils....and I told here if the pencils fit in it, she can have it. I'll be selling my 7070, and it's gonna have coins in it. From where things stand right now, these coins, or at least some of these coins, will likely be placed in the Dansco album after my type set has vacated it.

The set arrived....and the wife got the box.

What did I get? .... First off....they're all cleaned (not polished and all hairlined, but definitely dipped out) except the later date ones, but:

The Bustie ... is an 1824/1 which makes it a lot more interesting. It's probably a F-12 or so.

The The Columbian Expo has nearly full sail lines...

The seated is pretty whooped ... an 1843-O AG-3 would be my guess

The Barber's a 1909-O and is G/AG

Pics in a little while.

Still pleased overall.

I think you did just fine there. You're looking at around $105 in just melt value alone, and the two early halves are probably worth at least an extra $20-30 on top of that. It may not be the steal of the century, but certainly nothing to sneeze at.

As I said, I swapped out the rougher examples with better ones and kept the display case since it was so nice.

I'm contemplating leaving these in my 7070 when I sell it. I'm swicthing over to a stackable tray type storage with each coin individually encapsulated.

The Bust Half is a lot scarcer variety than I thought. It's an 1824/4, listed at PCGS as an R-5.

The deal just got a little better perhaps.
