For the first attribution I think is.

CONSTAN-TINOPOLIS

BSIS

Siscia

RIC 241

Constantinopolis Commemorative AE3/4. 334-335 AD. CONSTANTINOPOLIS, laureate, helmeted & mantled bust left holding sceptre / Victory standing left on foot of prow with sceptre and leaning on shield, •BSIS• in ex.

By Jove, I think he got it! When referring to this mintmark, however, it is dot SISB dot. For whatever reason, the dots are as much a part of the mintmark as the letters. Control symbols as mentioned in a previous thread.

I'm having some problems with the second Roma coin.

VRBS-ROMA

Wearing visor and crested helmet.

Wearing imperial mantle.

-----------------------------

She-wolf and twins, two stars above.

I think that I see TR, the other letters I cannot make out. There is that orange colored material in exergue as well. So, I think it's from Trier.

I tried to use the font to use a dot but it didn't come out right from Notepad to here.

So far, I haven't been able to find the exact RIC ID for the Roma coin. Going to the Julian II for the moment.

Unfortunately, I'm not finding a match for Julian II either, at the moment.

I think you have done OK, especially with regard to condition.

For the Julian, I think I see SIS with and unknown letter in front, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's from Siscia. With regards to that unknown letter, looks to me like a gamma or a B. Sooo... possibly RIC 415 Siscia? In hand, what do you see in the exergue gil-galad?

It does look pretty close to Siscia RIC 415. I also saw that one as well, but exergue looks more like gamma SIR to me. I can't check it right now since I have it soaking in olive oil.

And also, some coins are not pictured at some of these reference sites and even some are not in RIC.

Yeah, that last letter looks a little meh to me also, so I just went with S. When the mintmark becomes clearer, try using Helvetica tables. it doesn't have any pictures, but I've been able to attribute (and re-attribute) coins with Helveticas with no problem.

The mintmark on the Julian II looks like it could be GammaSIR, but I can't be sure. If it is it may be Sirmium RIC 108 or a variant. I need to check to see if "gamma" can also be part of RIC 108. I'll do some checking and see what I can come up with.

On the Roma, I can't make out the MM. Can you make anything out with it in hand?

All look worth $5 each - the first one a bit more IMHO. I would have put them in DW but not oil. The Roma could have benefited from careful picking at that crud on the mintmark. Sometimes pushing straight down on something like that with a pin with crack it and allow water in to soften but don't scratch or scrub.

Perhaps they may look like they are worth about $5, but finding them for that price is another matter.

What is DW? Is it WD-40 since I've heard people use it for coins?

I was kind of nervous about trying to prod that orange crud on the mintmark. But I think I will try it soon and be as careful as I can.

Thanks again for the advice.

I think DW stands for distilled water.

Back to the Roma coin. I used Helvetica's Excel sheets, ending up with;

Trier

RIC VII 524

Rarity: R5

Size: Follis

The coin I have is a little over 18mm. I don't have a measuring caliper just yet. I matched it up with a US Lincoln Cent which is 19mm. It is smaller than the Lincoln Cent.
